Hi Martha, welcome to Artistry in Motion!
In the aftermath of the theatrics of Halloween, the month of November calmly and serenely welcomes us. Plans start forming for holiday travels, big meals, and gift shopping. We begin to stress about what's coming due to weakened finances, schedule conflicts, or too few hours in the day. How do we reconcile what we want versus what is currently possible?
Picture yourself on January 1, 2025. How does Future Martha feel? Tired and guilty, or energetic and confident? What does Future Martha remember about this holiday season? The extraneous things that don't make this vision probably aren't all that important. Let's be gentle with each other this season, and most importantly, with ourselves.
Happy November! 🦃

Open Enrollment for 2025 Benefits & Artist Town Halls | By Kathryn Sears, Senior Director of Talent Arts | |
There are two big pieces of news this month!
The next Artist Town Halls are Thursday, November 7, and Friday, November 8.
Myself and other senior leaders will be in Robinson Hall at 11:00 PM (yes, at night) on November 7th and in Piner Hall at 2:30 PM on November 8th. We will be providing a recap of the DRIVE Culture Assessment, as well as other campus updates and answering your questions!

The BIG NEWS is that we have received the prestigious World’s Best Culture Award for the second year in a row… but as you know, we can always do a little better.
I will be coming back to you in February after the Workforce & Culture Taskforce has met to reveal what the 2025 Culture Plan will be.

Open Enrollment: Time to Review & Adjust Your Benefits
It’s here again: the one time of year you can change your benefits WITHOUT a qualifying event!
There will be changes to benefits and premiums this year. So, if you do not attend an open enrollment meeting in-person, watch the video that will be posted on Artist Central.
Dates:
- Open Enrollment in Paycom: 11/6/2024 – 11/17/2024
- Changes effective on: 1/1/2025
Actions to Take:
- Enrolled in Flexible Spending (Medical or Dependent Care)? You MUST re-enroll each year through Paycom.
- Most other benefits roll over into 2025 and don't require you to take action in Paycom.
- You may want to take advantage of Open Enrollment to review the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies and make sure your address, email, and phone number are correct.
Going to an open enrollment meeting is the best way to stay informed of changes.
The meeting dates are posted on Artist Central. Talent Arts is also having a drop-in session on Thursday, November 16, in the meal window lunchroom from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM.
We encourage ALL staff (part-time, PRN, and full-time) to participate. Open Enrollment on Paycom, which is accessible in the notifications area (the bell icon).
Remember that benefits information is always accessible on Artist Central, and your personal benefits may be seen in Paycom. If you have any questions, contact Talent Arts: hr@arboracres.org.

Artist Spotlight:
Shonette Pettiford, Healthcare Administrator
| |
|
1. When did you begin your career? What led you to Arbor Acres?
I began my career in the nursing home as a paid feeding assistant in 1997. I had started nursing school that year and I wanted to get a good feel for what I was stepping into. I loved it. After that, I became a cook’s aid, cook, and then a nursing assistant. Back then, the RN nursing program permitted us to sit for our LPN boards half-way thru the RN program. I took this opportunity to work as an LPN every weekend in the nursing home until I completed my RN. I had no knowledge of the Arbor Acres community until I spoke with a recruiter regarding the Healthcare Administrator opportunity.

I wasn’t looking for a change at the time. After doing some research on Arbor Acres, as well as reading staff and resident testimonials, I began to pray for guidance. I met with the senior leadership team and was super impressed. I had not had the opportunity to meet my boss prior to accepting the role, but I knew that based on the character of the leadership team, this person would be great; this has proved true. The rest is history.
2. What mantra/quote/concept, etc., most influences you as a leader in the healthcare field?
“Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” - Mark Twain
“Good leaders must first become good servants.” - Robert Greenleaf
“Trust but verify.” - Ronald Reagan
3. What has been going well so far in 2024, OR what are you looking forward to?
I am looking forward to growth and positive change. Sometimes we don’t realize that our growth has been stunted. Often, we need to change environments or enrich our current environment with new things. I am hopeful that, as the Healthcare Administrator, I can grow and bloom in my new environment while salting the soil of Arbor Acres in hopes of growing others.
4. Please share a personal/favorite story from your time at Arbor Acres so far.
I believe there is real value in building relationships. My grandma would often say, in order to have friends, you must show yourself to be friendly.
There is an Independent Living resident that comes to visit me about once a week. We talk about food, cooking, canning, healthcare, childhood memories and various other topics. Last week before she left my office, she looked at me and said, “It’s always good to talk to you. I think we are friends, don’t you?” I replied, "I do believe we are." This special exchange is a made memory.
