Embracing Aging: Lessons from a Journey Through Greece, Italy, and Belgium
I recently embarked on a three-week excursion out of the country, taking my daughter on a celebratory trip for her high school graduation. We traveled through Greece, Italy, and Belgium, and it was an unforgettable experience. My daughter often jokes that I am a "senior magnet," and she is not wrong. Seniors hold a special place in my heart, and I cherish opportunities to sit down, have a cup of coffee, and chat with them. In Greece, I was particularly fascinated by how seniors age in place. Unlike many places, I didn't see any nursing facilities on the islands. Curious, I asked around and learned that families often bring in caregivers from other countries to help their elderly parents remain at home. One morning, I had coffee with an elderly blind man who shared how his community supports him, allowing him to live independently.

In Belgium, my friend, knowing my passion for senior care, treated me to dinner at Restaurant Misverstand in Flanders. This unique restaurant employs individuals with early-onset dementia, providing them with a sense of purpose and confidence through their work. Restaurant Misverstand aims to demonstrate that life does not end with a dementia diagnosis; it is just a part of who a person is. This concept emphasizes that societal change, through cultivating tolerance and support, is key to embracing those with dementia. Similar restaurants have also been established in Japan. As the population of seniors in Indiana continues to grow, we too must foster a community that supports aging in place. Meeting seniors across my journey has been enlightening, reinforcing the importance of community support in enhancing their quality of life.

How we treat our elderly says a lot about who we are as a society. - Marc Middleton

Scam Alert- Safeguarding Seniors
Wednesday, August 21

Did you know that seniors are among the highest victims of scams and frauds? It's easy to believe that everyone has good intentions, but it's crucial for seniors to be aware of these issues. That's why we're thrilled to announce our partnership with the Attorney General's Office to offer a special session open to the public on August 21st from 5-6:30pm. Dinner will be provided. Join us to learn how to protect yourself from scammers and safeguard your finances. For example, seniors may receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a grandchild in distress, requesting money urgently. Don't fall for it! Stay informed and protect yourself. See you there!

Silver Serenity: Empowering Wellness for Seniors
Thanks to the generosity of Community Health Network, we are thrilled to announce a new initiative aimed at supporting our seniors both physically and mentally. With a gracious grant, we are introducing fitness classes three times a week, tailoring fitness programs for seniors to take home and enjoy with their families and providing essential equipment. This initiative is designed to address the critical issues of depression, obesity, physical inactivity, and chronic disease among our senior population. We are incredibly blessed to have such robust support within our community, recognizing and acting on the need to uplift and care for our aging population.
Community Garden Expansion Thanks to Local Boy Scout Josh Lindley
We extend our heartfelt thanks to local Boy Scout Josh Lindley for addressing our need to expand our community garden. After last year's expansion, supported by AARP, we quickly realized we still needed more space to accommodate community members who either lack garden space at home or don't know how to start one. Josh stepped in and helped us add three new garden beds, two of which have already been adopted. One of our gardeners picked her largest cucumber today, reminiscing about gardening with her grandmother. Eager to adopt a bed, she’s learning a lot this year and is excited to grow even more next year.
Celebrating Talents at Still Waters
At Still Waters, we believe that every guest has unique talents to share, enriching our community and fostering a sense of purpose, especially for those with dementia. Our guest Bruce, a former concert pianist, delights us with his beautiful music every late afternoon he is here, creating a joyful atmosphere as everyone sings along. Tom, another guest, has designed an engaging game that challenges and entertains us all every Friday. Meanwhile, Ms. Clara brings her passion for gardening, sharing her green thumb to help our garden flourish. Dementia doesn't define us; it shapes our experiences and contributions, making our community at Still Waters truly special.

Dementia does not diminish a person’s talents or their ability to bring joy to others; it reveals the resilience and creativity within them. - Dr. Richard Taylor, Author and Dementia Advocate
