Making it Work Better

The NMI has received UGA’s inaugural Excellence in Academic Program Assessment Award!

This award recognizes the intentional, dedicated effort of NMI faculty to annually assess student learning outcomes. According to UGA’s Office of Instruction, the New Media Certificate was among the top 1% of programs demonstrating outstanding academic program assessment.

“It is evident that the program is committed to ensuring a strong learning experience for students by engaging in ongoing, reflective assessment practice,” said Office of Instruction Director of Assessment Katie Burr.

This award is an amazing recognition of the collective work of NMI faculty, staff, and our Advisory Council, and the NMI’s mission to make things work better. But specifically, this award reflects the dedication of Certificate Faculty Advisor Tyler Mazurek to gather, organize, and present data that helps us improve year after year. Thank you, Tyler! What can we say – the man loves a spreadsheet.

Site Visit to Delta HQ, Now Boarding

Last week, more than 30 NMI students took flight to Delta HQ in Atlanta for our final site visit of the year! NMI Alum and Advisory Council member, Kristyn Hicks, gave us a quick overview of Delta as a company, brand, and community. She also shared how she has transitioned through various positions at the airline powerhouse over the years.

Kristyn then opened the floor to fellow NMI grads Clarke Modlin and Michelle Li from Delta’s content creation and strategy teams. Our students were able to learn more about what social media looks like when working for a legacy brand and the amount of collaboration necessary to manage social platforms for a global leader like Delta.

Jay Cromwell, a product manager with Delta’s digital team, then led a discussion on how he and his team leverage technology and digital platforms to further streamline the travel process from the stance of both a consumer and frontline employee.

Over a delicious lunch, we met with members of the Delta College Recruiting team who shared details about Intern and Co-Op opportunities, giving our students an early foot in the door! We ended the day with a visit to the onsite Delta 747 Experience, which featured a stripped-down Boeing 747 for us to explore!

A Look Back at Destination: TEDxUGA 2025

Last month, Destination: TEDxUGA 2025 took the stage and what an incredible journey it was! From the Dream Job Fallacy to Shorebird Conservation, seven inspiring presenters – including our first-ever Athens community member – shared their passions, research, and ideas worth spreading with a global audience of more than 700 participants.

This year’s theme reminded us that the paths we take and the connections we make shape our experiences in powerful ways, and when these ideas take flight, we’re all changed. TEDxUGA once again proved that the journey is just as meaningful as the destination.

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who helped make this event possible. From our sponsors, TED Fam, audience, and more, we truly could not have done it without you! If you couldn’t make the trip this time, don’t worry—the journey isn’t over. Each talk will be published on our YouTube channel in the weeks to come. In the meantime, check out photos from the stage and behind-the-scenes!
