Nov. 1, 2023
Neighbors,
One of Fairfax County's most valuable assets is our older adult community – residents who are 50+ years old. According to the county's Department of Management and Budget's demographers, there are more than 400,000 of us older residents (yes, I'm included in this group). Our older adults are engaged community members, volunteer, support the arts, provide leadership and contribute to our neighbors in need. I'm very proud of the efforts of the Board of Supervisors to ensure that our older adults can age in place and continue to thrive and contribute.
County agencies provide a long menu of programs, resources and services for older adults that you should explore. There are job resources, caregiver support services, tax assistance, emergency preparedness tips and a lot more. Here's a good place to start. In addition, there are a number of events scheduled every month specifically for older adults. Here are a few that are coming up:
Medicare 101 Presentations
Open enrollment for Medicare is underway. Attend a Medicare 101 presentation for an overview of the many components of Medicare: Part A (inpatient hospitalization/skilled nursing), Part B (outpatient hospital/doctors/labs/radiology), Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans), and Part D (prescription drugs), as well as how to cover the gaps in Medicare benefits through Medicare Supplement Plans. Presentations are available in-person and virtually. 2023 Medicare 101 Presentation Schedule.
Providing Care at the End of Life, Friday, Dec. 1, 2-3 p.m.
Join this panel discussion about end-of-life care, which can be overwhelming, and caregivers and loved ones may not be prepared for it. Explore what end-of-life care is and what supports are available for you and your family members. Register to receive an email with access instructions.
Virtual Center for Active Adults - New events every week
Whether you are just turning 50 or closing in on 90, I hope that you will take advantage of these county resources available to you! If you have any questions, contact my office.
Regards,
Walter

Bat Festival (yes, those bats) is a Success
The Hunter Mill District participated in the 2023 Bat Festival held at Wolf Trap last Sunday. It was a fun family event to celebrate the unique role of bats in our ecosystem. Just in time for Halloween, there was a great turn out to see bat demonstrations, participate in a bat costume contest, learn about the dark skies policies and hear from bat experts.
