Elections Lead Latest Phishing Trends

The internet never sleeps. After the phishing threats related to COVID-19 finally began calming down a bit, there was yet another spike in attacks. This time, the attacks focus on the US Elections and the massive interest that that is generating. Users need to be on their toes when navigating election-related materials.

What Is Their Plan?

These messages intend to trick users due to their interest in the election as well as the sheer amount of information around the event. There are constant TV ads, notifications on social media platforms, and legitimate emails. The level of information going around trying to encourage citizens to complete their civic duty actually provides a smoke screen for bad actors.

With so much going around legitimately, users are less likely to think about these notices as threats and more likely to expect legitimate notices. This makes more people click on the phishing emails and ultimately click through to phishing schemes.

What To Do

Since these plots largely revolve around forcing people to make quick decisions, many of these phishing emails will come with titles like "You are running out of time to register!" or similar headlines that force the idea of a time constraint into your mind. That is important to remember and look out for.

The best thing to do is always to navigate to your state's sites. You should never input personal information like your driver's license online unless you have navigated directly to the site on your own rather than clicking on a URL. While it is possible to register online, that information is very valuable to bad actors and means extra caution must be taken before inputting it on any website.
