Presentation from Bacardi Jackson, Southern Policy Law Center

The School-to-Prison Pipeline has become a hardened reality in Florida’s schools. Meanwhile, the reactionary fear-based, evidence-free policy responses to school tragedies have made our schools less safe, hostile and harmful to students who are often under threat from over-policing.  Pushes for the proliferation of guns in the hands of inadequately trained civilians on school campuses, the failure to enact a minimum age of arrest, Florida’s excessive and unprecedented use of the Baker Act on over 35,000 children a year have created a law and order climate that does little to ensure the kind of school climate where teachers can teach and students can learn. Siphoning away hundreds of millions of dollars to pay for the militarized police state that amounts to little more than security theater has a real cost for likely a whole generation of students, especially as existing disparities in educational access and opportunities are exacerbated by the COVID crisis.  Bacardi Jackson, Managing Attorney and Sr. Supervising Attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Group’s Children’s Rights Practice Group will discuss these issues and share the work that SPLC is doing to challenge these policies.
