Superintendent's Weekly Message

Bike and e-bike safety continues to be an important topic in our community, especially as more students use these modes of transportation. Last week, I was honored to participate as a panelist at Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s Beach Cities E-Bike Town Hall & Community Ride, where local leaders gathered to discuss safety enforcement, infrastructure engineering, and e-bike education.

At HBCSD, we remain committed to keeping our students safe. Through our "Be Safe, Be Smart" campaign and our 60-second safety videos, we are helping students and families learn the essentials of safe riding practices. We encourage you to check out our latest video, E-Bike Safety Tips -Tire Safety, and review our E-Bike Safety Guidelines, which include laws, helmet requirements, and important tips for riding responsibly.

We ask all families to continue having regular conversations with their children about safe biking and e-biking in our neighborhoods. As a family, recommit to the HVS Safety Pledge:

Be Safe, Be SMART:

S - Snap on your helmet correctly

M - Make sure to look both ways

A - Always follow the rules of the road

R - Remember to brake at stop lights

T - Take your time

Together, we can continue to promote a culture of safety, responsibility, and care for one another.

Stay safe and ride smart,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Superintendent of Schools, Hermosa Beach City School District

Be Safe, Be SMART, Hermosa!

As part of our ongoing “Be Safe, Be SMART” campaign, the Hermosa Beach City School District has teamed up with the Hermosa Beach Police Department and Hermosa Cyclery to bring important E-Bike Safety Tips to our students, staff, and community. This month's video highlights tire safety and how to check for wear and know when it's time for a replacement for a safer ride. Remember to always "Be Safe, Be SMART, Hermosa!"

Important Reminder for HBCSD Families

Testing season is just around the corner! To help make it a smooth experience for all students who are testing, please remember to:

  • Keep your Chromebook fully charged
  • Return any borrowed Chromebooks to the District as soon as possible
  • Handle your device with care to keep it test-ready

Let’s work together to make this a successful and stress-free testing season!

Shoes & Socks Drive - Upcycle for a Greener Future

Help reduce waste and support sustainability by participating in the Shoes & Socks Drive with Hermosa’s Grades of Green Team. As part of our April environmental initiatives, they are collecting worn-out sneakers and socks to give them a second life instead of sending them to landfills. Collection bins will be available at Hermosa View, Vista, and Valley from March 31 to April 11. Please donate clean shoes and socks, as they cannot accept items with mud, grass, or gum. If you have questions or would like to get involved, contact Hermosa’s Grades of Green Co-Chairs Jessie Kernan and Julia Lau at gradesofgreenhb@gmail.com.

Hermosa Vista School Principal News

April is almost here, which means Earth Month is just around the corner! With the warmer weather, it’s the perfect time to walk or bike to school whenever possible. It’s a great way to stay active and help the environment at the same time. We’re also encouraging students to reduce waste at lunchtime by using reusable containers (no glass, please). Small steps like these can make a big impact!

To kick off Earth Month, all 2nd-4th graders will attend the Environmental Defenders Rock the Planet - It’s Up to You Tour assemblies, presented by the Los Angeles County Public Works, on Monday, March 31. Students will learn about organic waste, the four R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink), stormwater pollution, household hazardous waste, and water conservation. If you’d like to learn more, visit dpw.lacounty.gov/epd/defenders.

This year, our HVPTO’s Dolphin Dash is going green! We are prioritizing sustainability by using a reusable, inflatable finish line, composting food waste, and eliminating single-use water bottles. Please remember to send your child with their own reusable water bottle for the Dolphin Dash at Vista on Wednesday, April 2. If you haven’t already, please consider registering your student to participate. Volunteer slots are also available for parents and guardians who would like to help out.

A big round of applause for our Dolphin Dash Leaderboard Vista classes - Ms. Irvine’s 3rd Grade Class (4th Place), Ms. Cederquist’s 4th Grade Class (5th Place), and Ms. Munson’s 2nd Grade Class (11th Place), followed by many other Vista classes. Go, Vista, go!

Thank you for supporting our efforts to build eco-friendly habits in our students. Together, we can make every day Earth Day.

Warmly,

Hillary Overbeck, Hermosa Vista Principal
