Welcome to the 2026-2027 School Year!

A Prayer for the Beginning of the School Year

Heavenly Father,

As we begin a new school year, bless our students as they enter a new year filled with opportunities. May they be strong in faith, confident in their abilities, eager to gain knowledge, and willing to use their gifts to make a difference in the lives of others.

Bless our parents and families with patience, wisdom, and strength, always remembering that we share the same goal: to help our children grow into young people who live their faith and use their God-given gifts in service to others.

Bless our faculty and staff with enthusiasm, creativity, and perseverance. Give them the wisdom to teach, the compassion to understand, and the strength to guide each child entrusted to their care.

As we begin this school year, fill our school with Your presence. May our classrooms be places of learning, our hallways be filled with kindness, and our community be united by faith and a shared commitment to excellence.

We place this school year, our children, our families, and our entire Saint Dominic School community in Your loving hands.

Amen.

Message from Bishop David M. O'Connell

A TIME FOR EVERY SEASON OF THE SOUL

As September rolls around and summer begins to fade, nature introduces us to the beginning of the Fall season: The air begins to change; days grow shorter; the brilliant greens of summer slowly yield to the golds, oranges and reds of autumn.

We recognize, once again, that God has woven change into the fabric of creation. Nothing remains exactly as it was, yet nothing is outside His loving providence. As one season ends, another begins, inviting us to embrace what God is preparing. And so it goes.

September always makes me think of the words of the Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1-8):

There is an appointed time for everything,

and a time for every affair under the heavens.

A time to give birth, and a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.

A time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to tear down, and a time to build.

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

a time to mourn, and a time to dance.

A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them;

a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.

A time to seek, and a time to lose;

a time to keep, and a time to cast away.

A time to tear apart and a time to sew;

a time to be silent, and a time to speak.

A time to love, and a time to hate;

a time of war, and a time of peace.

In my mind I can also hear Neil Diamond’s iconic “September Morn” and so many other nostalgic songs that refer to September. I am sure you can, too. These tracks demonstrate how September symbolizes more than a calendar shift: September serves as a rich emotional landscape for reflecting upon both what we have lost and what we choose to remember.

September often feels like more of a “new year” than January. Children return to school, parishes resume full activity, choirs gather, religious education begins and families settle into their routines. It is a fitting time to ask: Where is God calling me to grow this year? What fruits will the Holy Spirit produce in my life? Can I, will I, grow in charity, patience, generosity and hope? Am I willing to make the effort?

Look around and observe nature. Autumn teaches us that as leaves begin changing and the days grow shorter, change is truly part of God’s design. Every changing season has its purpose and so does every changing season of our lives. Before the starkness of winter arrives, autumn invites us to pause and give thanks for the harvest of God’s abundant blessings — the gifts of family, faith, parish life and the beauty of creation.

The Church’s liturgical year gradually turns toward the last things and ultimately toward Advent. The fading of nature, however, is never the final word. Christians know that beyond every autumn and every winter lies a springtime also prepared by God. In the meantime, remember God’s word: “There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens.” Let’s keep that in mind this September.

Message from Mrs. Tiernan

Dear Saint Dominic School Families,

I am delighted to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to all of our students, families, faculty, and staff! Mrs. Turnbach and I have been working throughout the summer to prepare for the year ahead, and we are filled with excitement as we get ready to welcome our students back and begin another wonderful year of faith, learning, and growth.

This school year brings many exciting opportunities and improvements to our school community. We are especially thrilled about the expansion of our PreK program, allowing us to welcome even more of our youngest learners into the Saint Dominic family.

We are also excited about the updates and enhancements to several classrooms, as shared in our summer letter to parents. These improvements will help provide our students and teachers with welcoming, updated spaces that support learning and creativity.

Our focus continues to be on creating a positive, faith-filled, and supportive environment where every child feels valued, challenged, and encouraged to reach his or her fullest potential. Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to providing an engaging and rigorous academic experience while nurturing the whole child through faith, knowledge, leadership, and service.

We know that the strongest schools are built through strong partnerships between home and school. We encourage you to remain actively involved in your child’s education by attending school events, communicating with teachers, attending PTA meetings, supporting learning at home, and sharing your thoughts and ideas with us. Your partnership is an essential part of our continued success.

We are incredibly excited about the year ahead and all that it has in store for our Saint Dominic School community. Thank you for entrusting your children to us. We look forward to a year filled with faith, friendship, achievement, and many memorable moments!

May God bless our students, families, faculty, and staff, and may He guide us throughout the coming school year.

With warmest wishes,

Mrs. Mara Tiernan

Welcome, Mrs. Kerney!

We are excited to welcome Mrs. Tina Kerney to Saint Dominic School as our Physical Education/Health teacher! Mrs. Kerney is already a familiar and friendly face in our school community as a parent of two SDS students and parent volunteer.

Mrs. Kerney brings a wealth of experience to our students. Before becoming a mom, she taught Physical Education and Health in the Westfield School District for 13 years. She has also served as a soccer and softball coach, owns a small business, and is a certified yoga instructor.

We are grateful to have Mrs. Kerney sharing her experience, energy, and passion for fitness with our students. Please join us in giving her a warm Saint Dominic School welcome!

PTA Class Parents Opt Out

September 1, 2026

Dear Parents:

In an effort to streamline communication within each grade, we will be providing the class parent with a list of contact information for families in each grade. This will include the name, phone number, and email address of the first parent listed in the FACTS SIS. Please know that your contact information will be shared only with your child’s class parent, not distributed school-wide.  The class parent will use this information strictly for school-related communication within your child’s grade. If you would prefer not to have your contact information included in this list, please notify PTA President Nicole Lehman via email (sdspta@stdomschool.org).

We will ensure your preference is honored, and your information will not be shared with the class parent.

If you have any questions about this process, feel free to reach out to me directly or to Mrs. Lehman. Thank you for your support.

Warm regards,

Mrs. Mara Tiernan

  • Children may bring their choice of food for lunch in the cafeteria. Please encourage your children to avoid the sharing of food, drinks, and utensils.

Technology Acceptable Use Policy

Saint Dominic School adheres to the Technology Acceptable Use Policy written by the Department of Catholic Education. This policy is found in the Diocese of Trenton Handbook for Policies and Practices for Elementary and Secondary Schools and on our school's website under the "Current Parents" link. All administrators, teachers, support personnel, and students must read and agree to abide by the provisions of the Technology Acceptable Use Policy.

Please click here to read the

full policy on acceptable use.

Early Dismissal and Absentee Policies

Saint Dominic School discourages early dismissals during the school day as they interfere with the instructional process. In the event that an emergency arises and an early dismissal is necessary, a written request from a parent or guardian must be submitted to the school front office and your child's teacher before the requested dismissal. Please do not request an early dismissal after 2:00 P.M. on full

days or 12:00 P.M. on early dismissal days.

Please click here for the Early Dismissal Request form

To receive the maximum benefit from classroom and instructional participation, it is important that children report to school each day. Illness of the student, death in the family, and exceptional instances that affect the child are the only legitimate excuses for absence from school. A written note from a parent or guardian

stating the date(s) and reason for absence must be presented upon the child's return to school.

Any student that is impacted by a custody agreement between a mother and father must have that paperwork updated and on file in the office. Parents or guardians are responsible for providing the school with copies of any court orders, custody agreements, restraining orders, or other legal documents that affect parental rights, custody, visitation, student release, access to records, or educational decision-making. The school must rely upon and follow the most recent court order or legal document on file. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to provide the school with updated copies of any modified or superseding court orders. The school is not responsible for enforcing or interpreting court orders that have not been provided to the school. In the absence of a current court order on file, the school will presume that both parents possess equal rights regarding access to educational information and involvement in school matters as permitted by law.

Guidance Corner

Dear St. Dominic Families,

Welcome back to a new school year! I am excited to continue supporting our students as they grow academically, socially, and emotionally throughout the year.

As part of our commitment to the well-being of every student, I will continue providing bi-weekly Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons throughout the school year. St. Dominic will continue to use the P.A.T.H. curriculum (Prevention and Awareness for Total Health), a series of research-based lessons designed to promote students’ safety, well-being, and healthy development.

Through engaging, age-appropriate lessons, P.A.T.H. helps students develop the skills they need to become confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals. Topics throughout the year will include:

  • Foundational wellness
  • Conflict resolution
  • Growth mindset
  • Friendship and relationship building
  • Kindness and empathy
  • Identifying “My Go-To People”
  • Self-worth and self-confidence
  • Mindfulness
  • Understanding and managing emotions
  • Character development

Foundational wellness focuses on the essential skills and healthy habits that help students feel safe, connected, confident, and prepared to make positive choices in their everyday lives. The goal of our SEL program is to provide students with a strong foundation of social-emotional skills that can be applied both in and out of the classroom.

I look forward to partnering with our students, families, and teachers throughout the school year to help each child develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive.

Wishing all of our St. Dominic students and families a wonderful, successful, and joyful school year!

Ms. Baranker, School Counselor

Transportation Safety

Anytime a student's method of transportation is changed, a note must be sent to the homeroom teacher and the front office. Children sometimes have difficulty in remembering last-minute changes. Only authorized students may ride buses that are assigned to them. This means no student may go home on a different bus when visiting a friend's house after school. Parents are advised to read Brick Transportation's Bus Policy, which can be found on our school website under the "Current Parents" link.

Bingo!

Saint Dominic Parish’s Friday Bingo has been a program that greatly benefits our school’s yearly budget.

It is essential that Bingo remains strong since our school budget depends on its success!

In order to keep Bingo as a revenue source for our school, we need the help of all school parents to “work” one Bingo during the 2026-2027 school year.

We completely understand that there are many households in which both parents work full-time jobs; however, our senior parishioners who volunteer their time each week to run Bingo can not do it alone and need help.

Each family will be scheduled for one (1) Friday Bingo date throughout the school year. Parents/guardians will receive a letter similar to this update during the first week of school. Further information regarding Bingo as well as the family's assigned Bingo date will be provided in that letter.

Please know that anyone over the age of 18 can “work” your Bingo for you. If it’s difficult for you to be released from your job, you may want to ask a family member or friend to help you by ‘covering’ your assigned Bingo date.

Thank you in advance for all of your efforts to help Saint Dominic’s Bingo thrive and allow us to maintain the school budget!

Renaissance Star 360 Assessments

Throughout the year, Saint Dominic School uses Star 360 Assessments to help teachers understand what students know and what they are ready to learn next.

The first window of Renaissance Star 360 testing is scheduled to begin October 13 , 2026. Students in grades 2-8 will each complete a 20 minute online assessment in Reading and Math. Results will be sent home when all testing has been completed.

Sacraments

Dear Parents,

It is exciting and wonderful that so many new Saint Dominic School families wish for their children to receive their Sacraments.

If your child has not been Baptized, please contact your parish.

If you are a Saint Dominic Church parishioner, please call 732-840-1410 to request a Baptism for your child.

If your child is baptized in the Catholic faith, but has not yet received the sacraments of Reconciliation or First Holy Communion, please notify Mrs. Kate Turnbach, Assistant Principal, at kturnbach@stdomschool.org or 732-840-1412 ext. 230.
