Living Our Values One Day at at Time

Cedar Lane Worship Associates

10:30 AM Sunday, July 26

in-person and online at bit.ly/sundayservicelive

The world is rapidly changing. The news can be difficult to watch. Events that many never could have imagined fill our news feeds. And yet, we keep going one day at a time. Join us as Cedar Lane's Worship Associates reflect on how they stay true to their faith, keep love at the center of their values, and incorporate meaningful actions, large and small, into their lives.

Quiet Callings with Kathleen Holmay

9:30 - 10:15 am in the Chalice House

This weekly in-person only space provides a quiet gathering with music, meditation, and community.

Sunday's theme: Surrender

Share the Plate: Shepherd's Table

This Sunday, Cedar Lane shares the plate with Shepherd's Table, a Silver Spring neighbor serving our most vulnerable community members for more than forty years. Every day, Shepherd's Table offers hot meals, a clothing closet, an eye clinic, and an urban garden to individuals and families facing hunger, houselessness, and poverty right here in Montgomery County. They don't just feed people, they companion them toward stability and hope. Please give generously.

You may give online (now with Google Pay), via Paypal, by texting 'CLUUC $[Amount]" to 73256, or by mailing it to Cedar Lane.

Children and Youth on Sunday Morning

During the summer, childcare will be held each Sunday from 10 - 12 in the Nursery room 28 (lower level). Children of all ages are also welcome to join us in the Sanctuary for our worship service.

Community Joys & Sorrows

We send healing wishes to Manuel Suarez who is recovering from minor surgery.

Our hearts are with the family of Rev. Susan Archer, former Minister of Religious Education here at Cedar Lane. She passed away peacefully in her sleep earlier this week.

Events and Happenings

Cedar Lane Arts Camp

August 17-21, 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Cultivate creativity, compassion, and community with a thoughtfully curated arts-based summer camp experience at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Open to ages 6-12.

Visit tinyurl.com/CL26SummerCamp for more information and to register.

Join the Cedar Lane Summer Choir and sing in worship on July 26!

Everyone is welcome to join the fun. Some ability to read music is helpful, but we also welcome those who enjoy being followers and singing by ear. Some private instruction can be arranged. Also, PDF copies of music and practice materials will be sent by email. Choir meets on Sunday mornings before the services at 8:30am in preparation for worship. Music will be much easier than what the Cedar Lane usually performs, with emphasis on the new UU Virtual Hymnal Sing Out Love. Please contact Michael Holmes, Director of Music and Arts at mholmes@cedarlane.org

Earth-based Celebrations: Lughnasa

Sunday, August 2, 9:30am - 10:20am at the bench circle

We celebrate the start of the harvest season! Lugh, or Lug, is a figure in Irish mythology, associated with skill and mastery in multiple disciplines, including the arts, oaths, truth, and the law. Come celebrate, and bring a friend, especially the outdoorsy ones!

If the weather is poor we will gather in the Chalice House.

Many Streams, One Ocean: An Intro to Hinduism

Thursdays August 6-27 on zoom

Rooted in a 4,000-year tradition, Hinduism is the world’s third largest faith and a growing presence in American spiritual life. Seekers of many backgrounds have found in its philosophy, stories, and practices something that speaks to their own deepest questions.

Over four online sessions we will explore Hindu history, sacred texts, theology, and spiritual practice, along with its remarkable internal diversity and its place in contemporary US. We will also discover points of connection with Unitarian Universalist values and history.

Register on realm. All are welcome.

TEXTURE, TECHNIQUE & TRADITION: Members & Friends Art Show

Opening on Sunday November 8

If you work with fiber, we’d like to display it! Cedar Lane will be showcasing all the wonderful ways we work with textiles: spinning and weaving, knitting and crochet, rug hooking and punch needle, embroidery and sewing, felting and quilting, macrame and tapestries, batik and paper - anything that can be hung on walls or displayed on a shelf.

Submissions will be accepted from September 4 through October 16. Stay tuned for more information and submission form coming soon.

Walk with us in the Kensington Labor Day Parade on September 7!

Signups are now open for our Labor Day Parade contingent on September 7. Join us as we walk together in our orange and yellow shirts, spread goodwill, and invite neighbors to learn more about Cedar Lane. https://tinyurl.com/LaborDay26

Updates and Announcements

Summer ValUUes: A Whole-Congregation Faith Formation Opportunity

On the theme of Generosity: Charles Du Mond (he/him) says "Look closely and you will see an entirely different species of tree growing from this larger tree. I considered calling this interdependence, but, really, the small tree is entirely dependent on the larger tree. I don't know if any human manipulation was involved with this creation, or if a random seed was deposited by a bird or a squirrel."

Summer ValUUes is a whole-church project to find our shared UU values in the world around us. Check out all our photos at cedarlane.org/summer-valuues

Food Support is Appreciated

Upcoming Cedar Lane Event for Immigrant Neighbors

The Immigrant Justice Ministry Team (IJMT) is planning an event to support our

immigrant neighbors early next month, and we are recruiting volunteers to help! We'll be

working with community partners through Action in Montgomery (AIM). Our work

centers the voices and needs of neighbors who are most affected.

We'll share details about the event and sign up volunteers after this week's worship

service on Sunday, July 26, and at our IJMT meeting Tuesday, July 28 at 7pm in the

library.

Cedar Laners can help in several roles as we stand in solidarity with our neighbors.

In the meantime, here's a poem that Rev. Abhi read to open a recent IJMT meeting. In

Gate 4-A Naomi Shihab Nye writes of the ways we meet each other in the moment

and, crossing cultures and circumstances, find ways to be present.

Welcome to Valerie Burrows and Lavender Accounting

Please join us in welcoming Valerie Burrows and her small, dedicated team at Lavender Accounting to Cedar Lane. Valerie brings deep experience with congregations and nonprofit organizations, a strong relational focus to her work, and enthusiasm for modernizing Cedar Lane's bookkeeping processes.

We will continue to update you as we move through the transition to a new part-time bookkeeping role, as well as when new processes are introduced that may shift how you interact with the bookkeeping office.

You are encouraged to review your statement to ensure that all your pledge payments were recorded correctly. Should you need to complete paying your pledge, you are welcome to do so at this link.

If you are interested in offering a course or learning experience this fall, please complete the proposal form (tinyurl.com/CLadultFF) by **August 1** for consideration.

We look forward to learning with you.
