The summer months, particularly the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day, are the most dangerous of the year for teen drivers.
Traffic fatalities increase at this time every year, and it is particularly tragic because so many of those killed are young drivers and their passengers.
Traffic safety experts highlight that the combination of increased free time, reduced parental supervision and more nighttime driving contributes to these alarming statistics.
It is important that we talk to our younger family members about the dangers of texting while driving, speeding, drowsy and distracted driving, as well as drunk and drugged driving.
As a community, it is vital that we raise awareness and educate our teens about safe driving practices. I urge parents and guardians to foster open conversations and promote responsible behaviors, so that we can help protect everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and motorists – on our shared roads this summer.
Let's ensure that our teens have the support and guidance they need to drive safely.
My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.
