A Quick Recap of the FCC News


In our July 10 newsletter, LPTVBA legal counsel Davina Sashkin of Wilkinson Barker Knauer LLP broke down the FCC's latest Public Notice and what it means for LPTV, TV translator, and Class A television stations.


Here's a quick refresher:



  • Several new LPTV rule changes are now officially in effect as of July 9, 2026, following FCC and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approval.
  • Not all rule changes are active yet. Certain provisions—including Class A and LPTV status changes and community of license changes—still require OMB approval. The FCC will issue another Public Notice when those rules become effective.
    
  • The FCC also clarified the current LPTV filing opportunity. Applicants filing FCC Form 2100 Schedule C now have guidance on how to answer the "Attributable Interest – Other Authorizations" question. 
    
  • More guidance is still to come.

If media conglomerates get their way, February 2028 will mark the sudden end of free, open television as we know it, instantly transforming millions of perfectly functional smart TVs and local streaming tuners into a mountain of electronic waste -- unless, of course, you pay a monthly fee.Right now, the National Association of Broadcasters is lobbying intensely to finalize these shutdown dates, betting that the average American won't notice the trap until the screen goes black.
