Nonprofit Legal Compliance Workshop, November 2, 2023 in Winston-Salem, NC.

We're excited to share details for the breakout sessions of the Nonprofit Legal Compliance Workshop on November 2, 2023 from 12:00-5:00 p.m. at the Benton Convention Center, 301 W Fifth Street, Winston-Salem.

In addition to the first-hour crash course on the basics of state and federal laws that govern nonprofit organizations, public charities, and charitable solicitation, and the final hour dedicated to Q&A, breakout sessions in between provide insight and guidance on new and current policies that may affect 501(c)(3) nonprofits.

Sessions include:

The Practice of Good Governance

This session covers the basics of nonprofit board governance including the governance structure of nonprofit organizations, board members’ fiduciary duties, the relationship between the board and organizational management, and legal protection for nonprofit board members.

The Top 10 New State Laws Affecting Nonprofits in 2023

This session highlights several new state laws that are relevant for nonprofits including changes to charitable solicitation exemptions and renewals, new laws related to fundraising events, new rules for nonprofits with state grants and contracts, changes to election laws, and new limitations on training programs on topics of race.

Racial Equity Update: How Recent Judicial and Legislative Developments May Impact Your Nonprofit’s Mission

This session addresses how recent judicial and legislative developments may impact both internal DEI efforts and programs designed to address discrimination and inequity.

Federal Employment Law Update for Nonprofits – The Latest on Worker Classification and the Proposed FLSA Overtime Rule

This session provides an update on details of the U.S. Department of Labor's proposed regulations on worker classification and the salary threshold under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and how the potential reclassification of some of your nonprofit’s workers may affect your organization’s budget and operations. You'll also hear about steps nonprofits can take now to be prepared to comply with these changing rules.

Student Debt and Nonprofits – How to Support Your Staff and Constituents with Their Student Debt

Panelists from MDC will outline student debt relief options available to both employees and constituents of NC nonprofits and discuss the role of nonprofits in outreach, education, and policy change. They will also address reducing the stigma associated with student debt, the equity issues inherent in the student debt space, and how student debt relief is an opportunity to close racial wealth gaps, encourage new businesses, and increase opportunities for career growth and development. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own student debt experiences and how student debt affects them and their constituents.
