Cook County Joins SSMMA and Councils of Government to Restore Local Government Distributive Fund
This week, nine Councils of Government, including the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association along with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and Cook County President Preckwinkle participated in a Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF) press event calling for Governor Pritzker to restore funding to promised levels.
Former SSMMA President Mayor Vernard Alsberry, from the Village of Hazel Crest, represented the 45 municipalities in the south suburbs at the press event.
Mayor Alsberry reiterated that the south suburbs are dependent on LGDF funds to lessen property taxes, assist with local municipality operations, infrastructure, and other community services that impact the quality of life that local municipalities provide to residents in the south suburbs.
"This is a growing concern throughout the state, more especially among municipalities that have disproportionality suffered during the economic downturn and accrued more dramatic declines in sale taxes revenue and higher increases in local property tax burdens due to the escalated rates," declared Alsberry.
Councils of Government Presidents issued a letter urging Gov. Pritzker and general assembly lawmakers to resist cutting local revenue owed to municipalities.

Mayor Ostenburg: "Give residents of Chicago’s predominantly Black and brown south suburbs the same opportunities that are afforded to residents of predominantly white suburbs."
|
Former Park Forest Mayor John Ostenburg recently shared his thoughts on the economic decline of south suburban communities as demographics in the region continue to change.
"Economic development barely crawls along, except in a handful of municipalities that continue to be heavily white. For the other communities, major economic development is the opening of a new drive-thru restaurant or another mom-and-pop shop. While those are important to the economic growth of any region, they don’t provide the needed tax base or employment opportunities that major retail and office complexes do."
