“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”

~Isaiah 9:2

So declares Isaiah, the prophet whose words are an integral part of the Advent season. Advent can be a time of immense joy—laughter, hope, and loved ones gathered together. Advent can be a season of light—fireplaces, and candles in windows.

However, for many, Advent feels like a month-long walk down memory lane that leaves us aching, a series of traditions that just don’t fit anymore. While many are decking the halls with wreaths and garlands, others are weighed down by grief and sorrow. Empty chairs, tender memories, and recent losses can make this time of year feel especially heavy rather than joyful.

As a church, we are called to make space for the whole truth of the season. God meets us not only in celebration, but also in sorrow. If this season is hard for you, you are not alone. We invite you to join us for our Longest Night service on Monday, December 22nd at 7 pm.

Also known as Blue Christmas, this is a quiet, contemplative service that creates a safe space to name your struggles, and remember that it’s okay not to be okay. It is an opportunity to take a deep breath and reflect upon the changes in your lives, the grief, the losses and the challenges. It’s a time to be in community and to also remember that, in spite of everything that happens in our lives, God is with us, and the promise of the light of Christ is just around the corner.

The story of Christmas begins in the midst of uncertainty and longing, reminding us that love is born right where we are, even in grief. Let us gather together to testify to the darkness of the tomb, and the darkness of the womb, believing that God is with us, not only in light, but also through the darkest nights.
