Happy November! Even though the days get shorter, the weather turns colder and you might think it's time to hibernate for the winter, there is plenty to keep us busy and much to celebrate in November. November brings us Thanksgiving, a day to give thanks for all you have and spend time with those you love; Veterans Day, a day to honor those who served; and Election Day, a day we choose those who govern. Other observances this month include: Native American Heritage Month, National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, National Family Caregivers Month, American Diabetes Month, National Puzzle and Game Week, National Cinnamon Day, Peanut Butter Lovers Month, and Black Friday.
On November 9, we will hit the ground running to start filling the seats for new adventures at our 2027 Bus Trip Kick-Off! On November 10, registration for the winter session of classes begins. Also on November 10, hear Russ Pettis talk about the shipwreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on its anniversary. Come learn about the History of Witches, presented by Diane Duray, on November 12. Get your holiday shopping started at our Paparazzi Jewelry Sale on November 13 and our Flea Market on November 19 and 20. Continuing with our U.S. history theme for the year, Suzanne Podrazik will present a lecture on George Washington on November 23. Come play a special Thanksgiving Bingo on November 23 for some great fall-themed prizes or get an energetic workout in right before Turkey Day with Ryan Shupp at an EDM Dancercize class on November 24.
There's a whole lot more happening at the center in November, so read on to get details about these, and all of our November classes, activities and events!
We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving filled with family, friends and fabulous food!

SOUTH COUNTY SENIOR ACTIVITY CENTER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Jim Schessler
-
Where were you born? Pittsburgh, PA
-
Tell us a fun or interesting fact that your Center members may not know about you. I worked for decades in the motorcycle industry, did a little road racing and accumulated half a million road miles on twenty-odd bikes.
-
How did you first hear about/get involved with the South County Senior Activity Center? I was looking for a refresher course on guitar playing and saw Russ Jones’ “Guitar for Fun” around 2019 or so.
-
How do you spend your time at the South County Senior Center?Group Guitar Practice every Thursday morning, teaching “Fundamentals of Guitar” for the AACC Lifelong Learning program, helping out members with their guitar-related problems. Also, it’s a great place to chill out and read in peace.
-
What is your favorite event that the Center has done since you have joined? The pop-up guitar workshops that I hold a few weeks before each course I teach.
-
Who would you want to have dinner with- dead or alive? Eratosthenes of Cyrene. (276 /194 BC), who was an Ancient Greek polymath: a philosopher, scholar, mathematician, geographer, poet, astronomer, and music theorist. His nickname was “Beta” because he was the second-best in the world at everything.
-
Why is the South County Senior Center important to you? It’s a great place to meet people around my own age who have stories and interests to share.

Intake Form Renewal!
A Friendly Center Reminder
As we begin this season of giving thanks, we'd like to thank you all for being part of our South County Senior Activity Center family. We are so excited to continue offering engaging programs, activities, and resources to our members.
Important Intake Form Reminder
It's that time of year when we kindly ask everyone to ensure their membership information is up-to-date. This is a crucial step for us to provide you with the best possible service and maintain accurate records.
If you have NOT completed an Intake Form (membership form) since October 1, 2026, you will need to complete a new one, even if you already completed one earlier this year. Intake forms must be reviewed and renewed annually by all center members.
-
Action Needed: Please check with any center staff member at the front desk or during your next visit to determine if your membership is current. They can quickly let you know if you need to complete the form and provide you with one to fill out.
-
Why it Matters: Completing the form ensures we have your current contact information, current emergency contact, and to ensure enrollment in the Senior Nutrition program.
We are here to help you get this done quickly and easily!
Beginning November 2, during registration for November programs, we will have intake forms available for everyone to fill out. Please make sure to complete the forms and return them to a staff member.

Have you heard about LRM?
The Longevity Ready Maryland (LRM) plan is Maryland's first comprehensive, 10-year multisector plan designed to coordinate services and policies to support the state's growing population of older adults. It was initiated by an Executive Order signed by Governor Wes Moore in early 2024.
The plan is a collaborative, long-term effort that aims to:
- Consolidate resources and coordinate efforts across government agencies, businesses, and communities.
- Transform systems of care to more sustainably accommodate the increasing number of older Marylanders.
- Ensure all Marylanders can live lives that are healthy, financially secure, socially connected, and purposeful.
The LRM plan is structured around four main "Epic Goals":
-
Build a Longevity Ecosystem: Create supportive and inclusive communities for all ages and abilities and build collective capacity at the local level.
-
Promote Economic Opportunity: Support a multigenerational workforce with opportunities for all ages and abilities while advancing Maryland's economic competitiveness.
-
Prepare Marylanders to Afford Longevity: Improve economic security and affordability for the "100-year lifespan" through affordable housing, health care, financial literacy, and long-term support services.
-
Optimize Health, Wellness, and Mobility: Invest in programs that support healthier, more purposeful, and active lifestyles so Marylanders can enjoy longevity and reduce dependency.
The plan includes specific actions like launching a new statewide dementia navigation program, expanding access to home- and community-based services, and modernizing the state's information and referral network.
