Global CBRE survey finds environmental and social features impact ‘perceived’ building value

Companies are favouring environmental, social and corporate-governance (ESG) factors more heavily in their decisions on which buildings to lease or buy, with many prioritizing green-building certifications and features that reduce energy consumption or generate renewable energy, according to a new global survey from CBRE.

The survey examined responses collected in Fall 2022 from more than 500 commercial real estate professionals worldwide. Overall, more than two thirds of respondents said their companies’ focus on ESG intensified in 2022 and the primary ESG consideration for real estate is to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Experts examine Toronto fundamentals as crane count rises

Toronto is again tops in North America in the latest Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) Crane Index but with headwinds continuing to buffet the construction sector in Ontario, the question emerges: how long will it last?

The Q1 count of construction cranes in the skies of 14 North American cities revealed Toronto’s biannual dominance in the count continues. RLB reported April 10 that the Toronto skyline had 238 cranes, far surpassing Seattle, which has 51 cranes, Los Angeles, with 47, and Denver, 36.

Toronto also led the pack by a large margin in Q3 2022 with 230 cranes and there were 252 counted in Q1 2022.

Toronto takes steps to reduce traffic congestion during Ontario Line construction

The City of Toronto announced it is taking steps to balance critical transit construction with the needs of people and businesses who use Toronto’s roads.

To prepare for Metrolinx’s construction of an Ontario Line connection to the TTC’s Queen Station beginning this spring, the City is working closely with Metrolinx, contractors and the TTC to ensure that traffic congestion and construction impacts are reduced as much as possible by holistically reviewing capital construction plans, upcoming road restrictions and accessibility around all construction zones downtown.

Expected green regulations may impact builder capacity, says RESCON

The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) is expressing concerns about the provincial government’s apparent rush to implement new green building standards for construction at the same time it is proposing to build 1.5 million new homes by 2031.

The province is in the process of setting up meetings to begin developing a new province-wide approach for interested municipalities and other stakeholders to transition to certain green building standards into the Ontario Building Code (OBC).

Architects Want to Print the Buildings of the Future

For centuries, wood, masonry, and concrete formed the basis for most structures on Earth.

In the 1880s, the adoption of the steel frame changed architecture forever. Steel allowed architects to design taller buildings with larger windows, giving rise to the skyscrapers that define city skylines today.

Since the industrial revolution, construction materials have been largely confined to a range of mass-produced elements. From steel beams to plywood panels, this standardized kit of parts has informed the design and construction of buildings for over 150 years.
