Helping New Managers

“Get it Right from the Start”

Greetings!

October is here, and year-end review season is right around the corner. Here is what I have been up to lately. I completed the draft of Part 1 of my upcoming book, After the Promotion, and I visited Black Wall Street in Tulsa, OK.

Now, a thought for your new managers.

Sincerely,

The Year-End Review Shouldn't Be a Surprise

A performance review should never spring a surprise on an employee. When your new managers use regular one-on-ones to set expectations, recognize progress, and address concerns as they happen, review day becomes a recap of conversations already held. Asking employees to draft their own reviews is a shortcut that skips the attention good management requires. Writing the review is the manager's job, and it starts with brief notes after each check-in. Before review season, I encourage them to check two things: that they could write each assessment without an employee's help, and that nothing they plan to say will come as a surprise.
