Superstorm Sandy Stories
In preparation for the 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, the Staten Island Community Organizations Active in Disaster (SI COAD) and the Office of the NYC Comptroller have partnered on an initiative to gather community stories about Superstorm Sandy. We ask community members to reflect on their experiences when Sandy impacted our Staten Island communities during this time and share their experiences via written stories, photos, and/or video sharing. Please circulate this survey widely with those (especially leaders in community planning, preparation, response, resilience, and recovery). Please read below for the official project introduction from the office of the NYC Comptroller.
Project Intro: The Sandy Stories initiative we are working on in the lead-up to the 10-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy is meant to highlight the continued need for community-driven resilience in our city. Our team specifically wants to hear from community groups and organizers who have experience building resiliency on the ground. From these interviews, we aim to develop concrete recommendations for the city to support sustained, long-term capacity for community-led resiliency efforts like you have been involved with.
We are working with Urban Ocean Labs, a Brooklyn-based policy think tank for the future of coastal cities. They are working with our office on this project to identify models of community-led resilience that can be better supported and scaled within NYC, and also shared across cities for more climate-ready coastal communities. In addition to speaking with NYC-based organizations, they are also looking for models of community-led resilience in coastal cities across the U.S to help inform better policy recommendations.
