Q & A Corner

Modifiers

Question: "Dr. Kotlar, are CPT code modifiers necessary, and do they really help you get paid faster?"

Answer:

Yes, and yes! Modifiers are crucial for correct claims processing and payment, especially for federally funded programs like Medicare.

Here's why:

  1. Necessity: Modifiers provide essential information about how a service or procedure was altered without changing its core definition.
  2. Faster Payment: Correct use of modifiers can prevent claim denials, often caused by missing or incorrect modifiers.
  3. Accurate Reimbursement: Modifiers ensure you receive the correct payment amount for services rendered.

Key Modifiers for Chiropractic:

  • Modifier 25: Used for significant, separately identifiable E&M services on the same day as a procedure.
  • Modifier 59: Indicates a distinct procedural service.
  • Modifier AT: Used for active treatment in spinal CMT codes.
  • Modifier GP: Indicates services delivered by a physical therapist or under a PT plan of care.
  • Modifiers GA and GY: Used for Medicare claims to indicate ABN status and non-payable services, respectively.

Remember to stay updated on the usage of modifiers, as the rules can change frequently. Proper use of modifiers, along with accurate documentation, is essential for efficient claim processing and appropriate reimbursement. Join us on October 24th for our webinar on 2025 Updates and Changes.

Quick Tips

Weekly Tips and Updates:

Chiropractic Assistant (CA) Tips

  1. Patient Education: With National Chiropractic Health Month, now is the perfect time to highlight the importance of the musculoskeletal system and age for our patients. Have a "Stretch of the Week" program, demonstrating simple exercises patients can do at home to improve flexibility and strength. Click here for Resources from the American Chiropractic Association. Remember, when sharing content, protect patient privacy. Never post identifiable patient information without explicit consent.
  2. Staff Training and Development: Train staff on securing patient information. Be vigilant about protecting patient data, always lock the computer screens when stepping away, and never share login credentials with anyone.
  3. Patient Management & Technology: Enhance your practice's cybersecurity by regularly updating all computers and devices. Set a weekly reminder to check for and install any pending software updates.

Cybersecurity Awareness

Compliance & HIPAA - Special Edition

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a month-long initiative designed to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity nationwide. Each week, we will spotlight specific aspects of cybersecurity and compliance to enhance your practice awareness and practices.

Cybersecurity Password Protection

While reusing the same password for all your online accounts might appear convenient, it presents considerable cybersecurity threats. If a single password is compromised during a breach, it simplifies access for cybercriminals to your other accounts sharing that same password. Rather than attempting to recall 100 distinct passwords, think about utilizing a password manager. These tools generate, store, and automatically input passwords for you, requiring you to remember only one robust master password.

Be Smart, Stay Safe

Think Before You Click

Think twice before clicking on links in unsolicited messages. Be wary of any messages or calls trying to get you to reveal passwords, government ID numbers, credit card numbers, or any other sensitive information.

Use Strong Passwords

Use different passwords for all your apps and websites. Consider using complex passphrases or letting a password manager create unique passwords for you.

Software Updates

Update the operating systems on your mobile phones, tablets, and laptops to ensure you are using the latest, most secure versions. Enable automatic updates and restart your device when prompted to allow for updates.

Use MFA

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) offers an additional layer of security and should be activated on your devices and accounts. It's also advisable to protect your password manager with MFA.
