Dr. Piccinini Named AOA President-Elect at House of Delegates

MOA is proud to share that our own Robert G.G. Piccinini, D.O., D.FACN, an American Osteopathic Association board-certified osteopathic psychiatrist, was elected as the president-elect of the AOA at its House of Delegates in Chicago last month.

In addition, a delegation from MOA attended the House of Delegates and formulated resolutions, engaged in discussions to solve patient care problems, and collaborated with fellow osteopathic doctors from across the country.

Thanks to all the delegates who represented Michigan, and congratulations once again, Dr. Piccinini!

Osteopathic Advocacy Alert

Michigan lawmakers are once again considering a bill (S.B. 279) that would significantly expand the scope of practice for nurse practitioners by granting them autonomous practice authority.

Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) President Emily Hurst, D.O., recently testified in front of the state legislature, urging lawmakers to oppose this bill due to the potential harm it poses to patient safety. While we deeply value the essential contributions of nurse practitioners in our health care system, this expansion could jeopardize patient safety and the quality of care by allowing practices that should be reserved for fully trained and qualified physicians.

Help us bolster our message by sharing your voice and letting your lawmakers know your concerns about this bill. Send your elected officials an email today.

Memorial Healthcare receives continued funding from Michigan’s rural access pool

Memorial Healthcare, an independent, community non-profit hospital in Shiawassee County, has been recognized by the U.S. News & World Report 2023-2024 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care ratings, offering expecting families options for seeking high-quality care for uncomplicated pregnancies.

Memorial Healthcare has also received increased state funding support as a rural health care provider. In 2023, the hospital received roughly $1.3 million in the state 2024 fiscal year as part of the State of Michigan’s Rural Access Pool, resulting in state funding for Memorial Healthcare to help preserve essential health care delivery throughout rural mid-Michigan.

Recently, Memorial Healthcare announced the continuation of funding from Michigan’s Rural Access Pool in the state budget for 2025. Additional state funding specifically allocated to support needs within its Maternal Health Unit has also been included to ensure enhanced safety and comfort for birthing patients.

Snacking Smarter On the Go

There are several reasons snacking is good for us. Snacks can be used to give us more energy throughout the day, or as something to hold you over between meals. It can also prevent you from overeating during your meal.

However, finding healthy snacks and portions while on the go can be challenging, so it’s important to think ahead and plan for nutritious snacks throughout your day.

Read the below MI Blues Perspectives article for ways to snack smarter on the go, including:

  • What to consider when choosing snacks
  • Common mistakes when snacking and how to avoid them
  • Tips for navigating portion sizes
  • Effective strategies for navigating smarter snacking habits
