Hometown Folks Doin' Good: Bridgewater's Allison Rivera Supports Veterans at Home Base

"My name is Allison Rivera, and I am one of the Veteran Outreach Coordinators with Home Base. Home Base is a national nonprofit dedicated to healing the invisible wounds of war for Veterans of all eras, Service Members, Military Families, and Families of the Fallen through world-class, direct clinical care, wellness, education, and research – all at no cost to them – regardless of discharge status or geographical location. We have everything from therapy, military culture education, stress-management courses, recovery groups, couples counseling, and more."

"This will be my 6th year working at MGH, but I have only just completed my 1st year with the Home Base program. In my opinion, this position at Home Base is the most rewarding one I have ever held. I get to go into the community and network, answer questions about Home Base services, and connect people to care. Once your add your name to our list via the website or by calling in, someone from my team (comprised of all veterans) will reach out and help you register for a program. From when folks arrive here on Day 1, we see such an amazing transformation by the time we’re listening to their speeches at graduation. It makes me proud to work amongst such considerate people. I’m also a Staff Sergeant currently in the Army Reserve, and MGH and Home Base have relentlessly supported me throughout deployments, missions, drills, and service schools." It was great meeting Allison at Autumn Fest. At BuzzAround, we are dedicated to sharing stories of our Hometown folks Doin' Good. Send us your story so we can spotlight your favorite non-profit. Bwater@buzzaround.info

Historical Tidbit:

Veteran's Day

Veteran's Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I.

Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Veteran's Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Veteran's Day occurs on November 11 every year in the United States. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day.

Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World War I and World War II on or near November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November).

In Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.

Climate Can Do:

Drinking Water Without Nano-plastics

Plastic water bottles are filled with tiny bits of plastic called nano-plastics. These are bits of plastic that have broken down so small we cannot see them. But they are there, according to studies by Consumer Reports, Columbia University, University of Missouri, and many others.

The best way to avoid drinking nano-plastics is to use a metal or glass reusable bottle and fill it with filtered tap water.

Reusable water bottles keep you healthy and decrease one major source of nano-plastics in our environment: the disposable water bottle.

Bridgewater Academy Lions Trunk or Treat

On October 20th, a Trunk or Treat was hosted in collaboration with organizations in the community to raise funds for the 4th of July committee at “The Launch” 80 Spring St. Diane Sears said “We Lions "witches" offered a variety of allergy-free treats as well as the usual Halloween chocolate favorites. It was such fun to greet the huge crowd of all ages. The kids' costumes were outstanding, as were the many decorated vehicles participating. The upbeat music kept me dancing all afternoon. See some of our photos. We can't wait till next year's event.”

Invisible Heroes of Tomorrow attended with costumed characters, and Bridgewater Bagel served bubble drinks. Local businesses and organizations, including Bridgewater Print & Copy Center, Salon Fusion, America’s Little Angels Preschool, Barrett’s Alehouse Bridgewater, the Bridgewater Lions Club, GET Fit, A Million Little Dreamz, Aunties Creations LLC, Macaroni KID Bridgewater MA, Roche Bros. Supermarkets, and The Seven Line Project, participated with trunk-or-treat stations. This event marked a new Halloween tradition!

Happiness

"Happiness hides in the humdrum"

~ Paul Lynch, Prophet Song

"Happiness is not a goal, it is a by-product."

~ Eleanor Roosevelt

"Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be" ~ Abraham Lincoln

"Whoever is happy will make others happy." - Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

We share ourselves with others, be it happiness and joy or pain, fear, worry and sorrow; our words and actions impact those around us. Be mindful... what will you spread today?

Have a great weekend, All: my heartfelt thanks to our Veterans... including my dad, uncles, the mom of my grandchildren, and many dear friends. I hope we can work toward a world where we can war no more.

Bee Well,
