A Message from the Executive Director

As we progress through 2025, I’m proud to share that we have already welcomed nearly 400 students to Chapman School of Seamanship this year. From professional certifications to recreational boating programs, it’s encouraging to see such strong participation and continued enthusiasm for maritime education.

We’re especially looking forward to the start of our Summer Youth Boating Program, where we have the privilege of educating the next generation of safe and confident boaters.

We are also excited to be launching new programs this fall that will further our commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers in the marine industry.

This growing interest affirms our mission and underscores the importance of hands-on, high-quality training in today’s marine industry. Whether students are pursuing maritime careers or building essential boating skills, we remain dedicated to delivering instruction that is practical, professional, and impactful.

Thank you to our students, families, partners, and supporters for your continued trust and commitment to Chapman’s mission. Your continued support and enthusiasm keep our programs strong and our maritime community thriving. You can donate at any time by clicking here.

Chapman Staff Profile: Bryce Nickerson

Meet Bryce Nickerson, Director of Boat Management, Marine Corps Veteran, & Yamaha Program Instructor

Meet Bryce Nickerson, Director of Boat Management at Chapman School of Seamanship. Since joining the team in October 2022, Bryce has played a vital role in ensuring the operational readiness and instructional value of our fleet. He is responsible for the maintenance and management of over 25 vessels used across Chapman's professional and recreational programs.

A 2018 graduate of Community Christian School, Bryce went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps from September 2018 through September 2022. His military service honed the mechanical and leadership skills he now brings to Chapman’s hands-on learning environment.

In addition to his fleet responsibilities, Bryce also assists with technical instruction in our Yamaha Marine Technician Program—helping train the next generation of skilled marine professionals.

Outside of work, Bryce enjoys fishing, pleasure boating, working on engines, and exploring his passion for cars. His enthusiasm, technical expertise, and leadership make him an indispensable member of the Chapman team.

Safe Boating Tip: Inspect Your Safety Equipment

As boating season ramps up in Florida, it’s essential to take time for a thorough inspection of your vessel’s safety gear. Regular checks ensure everything is ready when you need it most.

Flares

  • Expire 42 months after the manufacture date (not purchase date).
  • Inspect each flare for corrosion, moisture damage, and a readable date.
  • Discard any that are wet or deteriorated.

Life Jackets

  • Check for dry rot, rips, tears, and ensure straps and closures work properly.
  • For inflatable models, follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.

Fire Extinguishers

  • Marine dry chemical extinguishers expire 12 years from the manufacture date, typically stamped on the bottom.
  • Replace any expired or damaged units.

First-Aid Kits and Emergency Devices

  • Restock expired or missing items in your first-aid kit.
  • Check EPIRBs and PLBs to ensure batteries are within expiration and devices are registered and functional.

Performing a safety check now ensures you’re prepared for a safe and enjoyable season on the water.

Tech Tips from Yamaha Master Technician Shane Bowlin

What To Do If You Strike An Object With Your Yamaha Outboard

Hitting a submerged object can cause serious damage to your Yamaha outboard. Acting quickly and correctly can help minimize the impact and get you back on the water safely.

Here’s what to do:

  • Shut Off the Engine – Turn it off immediately to prevent further damage.
  • Inspect for Damage – Check the prop, skeg, and lower unit for cracks, dents, or leaks.
  • Check Water Flow – Make sure there’s a steady stream from the tell-tale.
  • Restart with Caution – If no leaks or issues are visible, restart in neutral and monitor for vibration or noise. Vibration could be from a bent propeller shaft.
  • Inspect the Propeller – Remove it at the dock to check for hidden damage or debris.
  • Get a Professional Inspection – Even minor impacts can cause internal damage. Have a Yamaha-certified technician take a closer look.

Tip: Use charts and sonar to avoid shallow or unfamiliar areas.
