“Appreciation can make a day. . .even change a life."
Rishika Jain
Dear Southern Door Community
As I look back on our being in school for almost a full quarter, I like to reflect on the great things we sometimes take for granted. Here are just a few examples of what I have witnessed over the past few weeks:
--A parent shared that their family's first year at Southern Door has been wonderful and that they are so impressed with our school community;
–A new, yet experienced, staff member shared their delight at being a part of our school;
--Multiple teams of teachers, support staff, and principals are meeting on regular basis to look at data, and make plans to help individual children achieve at a higher level;
--STEAM activities at all grade levels are providing engaging, hands-on experiences in exploring solutions to real-life issues;
--Cross grade level experiences continue to make Southern Door unique experiences such as the high school band tutoring middle school students and the ag classes sponsoring their annual Animal Day and Drive Your Tractor to School event for the elementary school;
--Our volleyball team’s going undefeated holds much promise for the upcoming playoffs;
--The energy and long hours put into the high school musical by students and staff are sure to produce another fantastic showcase of musicianship.
The list could go on and on.
I marvel at the high quality work our staff do day in and day out each week, with our students, with ever increasing demands from the state on curriculum expectations, changing demographics, and growing student needs. What an awesome responsibility we have, and what an awesome privilege we have as well. We appreciate your continued support and partnership with us in the education of our community’s children.
Together We Are Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong!

Step into the enchanted world of Disney's
Beauty and the Beast
. Nominated for 13 Tony Awards and featuring all of your favorite songs (along with some new ones), is a timeless treasure for all ages.
The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.
This "tale as old as time" offers a great opportunity to bring your entire family together for theatre at its best.

ANNUAL MONARCH BUTTERFLY PROJECT
Earlier this month, Southern Door fourth grade students mailed envelopes full of paper butterflies and a greeting to groups of students in Mexico, as part of the 24th Annual Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration project. Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies migrate to overwintering sites in the mountains of Mexico. At the same time, symbolic paper monarchs made by over 20,000 school children from the United States and Canada find their way to students living in the monarch sanctuary area.
Through the Symbolic Migration, children across North America are united with children in Mexico by the monarch butterfly, and celebrate its spectacular migration. Together, they learn authentic lessons of ambassadorship, conservation, artistic message and international cooperation. Sometime in spring, when the real monarchs' departure from Mexico is announced, the paper butterflies will come back to our students, carrying special messages from the students in Mexico.
Our students will now focus on creating a personal larger, multi-layered painting and drawing project to show what they have learned about the monarch, and to help educate their family, school and community about the need to help preserve the monarch’s habitat and food sources. This project will include writing words in Spanish and English about the Monarch Butterflies, and their migration journey and hibernation.

INTERNATIONAL "SAVE A LIFE" TOUR
On Wednesday, October 30, 2019, the International "Save A Life" Tour will be at Southern Door High School. The program shows individuals exactly how drugs and alcohol impairs driving skills. Each individual experiences first-hand the devastating effects of driving under the influence through multi-million dollar Impaired and Distracted Safe Driving Awareness Simulators. The simulators are the only ones in the nation that give students a completely realistic, sober perspective on the effects of driving while intoxicated or distracted.
Each high school student will have the opportunity to hear the presentation during a general assembly at the beginning of the day. Following the general assembly each student will have the opportunity to participate in the simulator(s). It is our belief that both experiences will have a long-lasting impact which will assist our students in their decision making.
In addition to the presentation and simulator experience, our School Resource Officer and members of the Door County Sheriff’s Office, will be on site to provide first-hand experience and information to our students. We feel this collaborative experience is necessary as it links the activity to real-life experiences and resources within our community.
