We are pleased to announce Hyman Bloom at the MFA, Boston:
July 13, 2019 – February 23, 2020
Hyman Bloom (1913 – 2009) combined the physical and the spiritual on canvas. Committed to figurative painting at a defining moment of American art when abstraction was on the rise, Bloom employed thick paint in jewel-like tones to make richly expressive works that challenge our concepts of beauty and the transcendent and spiritual power of art. The MFA, Boston show includes 70 paintings and drawings from public and private collections, including works from MoMA and the Whitney.
On view at the gallery through September
A selection of major paintings and drawings from the artist’s estate
Hyman Bloom: American Master Installation View

Spiritual life cannot be delegated; true spiritual existence can only come from within, and it is only through individual effort to deepen the process that a state of grace can be achieved.  —Hyman Bloom
Hyman Bloom, Seascape IV (First Series) , 1975, oil on canvas, 49 x 69 inches

The art world, with its fast pace, ongoing turnover of interests, and voguish audiences, never held him. He always knew he was an anomaly. His only satisfaction was to mine the possibility for an art that could transcend temporal boundaries by alluding to a world beyond the material.  — Debra Bricker Balken from the introduction to  Modern Mystic: The Art of Hyman Bloom , published by D.A.P.
