Historical Tidbit:
School Transportation
[School Barge or a Pung]
|
The barge was a large wagon pulled by a team of horses or one large horse. The wagon would usually have a roof and sides with steps mounted on the back. The boys and girls would climb the steps and walk along a narrow aisle to find a seat along the sides. Perhaps the best time to ride the barge was during the fall when it was cool and the trees were bright with colors. They would often ask to stop to run out and pick some colored leaves to bring to the teacher.
The pung pronounced “pun” was a sled type wagon used in the winter usually pulled by one horse. Usually the floor was spread with sweet smelling hay and a few robes (heavy blankets) were available for the children to use. When it was really cold, some of the children would bring heated bricks or soapstone wrapped in newspaper to be placed at their feet once they got on the pung. When everyone was on and settled they would all sit together with the blanket pulled up around their chins and the warm bricks or soapstone at their feet.
If it were too cold, some children would get off and run along side the slow moving barge to warm up.
During the months of March and April, school usually closed because of the very muddy roads. When the roads dried out enough to allow travel, school would reopen.
The barge was finally replaced by the combustion engine making transportation faster and more comfortable.

Margaret Fitzgerald Garden
HALIFAX BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
499 Plymouth Street
As 2022 is nearing its last days, we start to think about 2023! One thing that is on our minds is the Margaret Fitzgerald Garden at the Halifax Town Hall. The garden is to the right of the Town Hall front door.
For several years, CMAC Landscaping services in Halifax has contracted to maintain the garden. It is mostly a charitable contract that is recognized by a sign and monetary payment.
The Halifax Beautification Committee is looking for companies/individuals to bid on the contract to maintain the garden. Please have bids in by January 31st, 2023. The committee will notify each bidder that we will be going over the bids at a February meeting to vote for the lucky caretaker to the Margaret Fitzgerald Garden.
We appreciate all bids and look forward to hearing from any individuals/groups/companies.
See Facebook post for whole agreement to bid on. It includes:

Climate Can-Do:
Help save the Earth and your wallet!
In Massachusetts, we have access to free energy services that help save money. With the winter weather getting fiercer each day, we’ve been turning on the heat.
“How can I save money managing my heating and cooling ?” You might ask.
MassSave provides an assessment the of your house-hold or business energy use. In Massachusetts - we’ve already pre-paid for it through a surcharge on our electric bill.
Check out the MassSave website, to schedule a no cost virtual or in-person home energy assessment and an Energy Specialist will assess the status of your energy use. They will also provide solutions to lead a more energy efficient household. MassSave collaborates with NGRID, Berkshire Gas, Eversource, and Cape Light Compact. MassSave provides these services and energy assessments for any category of property here in Massachusetts, whether that be residential, multi-family, or business oriented. Check it out!
This Climate Can-Do Article was written by intern Sean Fitzgerald from Lasell University. We focus on actions which will help mitigate the environmental changes of our climate emergency. Our goal is to keep the Earth's temperature from rising 1.5˚ C to lessen the impact. We can do!

Halifax COA Holiday Festivities
Halifax Council on Aging enjoyed festivities at Meadow Brook Restaurant, Hanson,
with gratitude for the financial support all year. Without the support of local grants and community public safety advocates, the Halifax CoA would spend many more dollars to create initiatives. Entertainer Tommy Rull bellowed songs of love supported by Mass Cultural Council and Halifax Local Cultural Council. We thank District Attorney Timothy Cruz and Staff for taking time to "wish all, safe holidays." Bella Rose, President of GENERATIONS, worked diligent with her Board to host a silent auction, raising monies for the senior center. We are especially grateful to Debbie Scriven of Meadow Brook for her genuine spirit and hospitality. Shout-out to Jo Jo Schofield and Diane Smith, CoA Administrative Associate for coordinating our Holiday grand event.

Thank you, Linda Redding for your photos that will last forever and thank you to Officer Cushman and Halifax Fire Dept for their sacrifices of family time while we enjoy our families and friends.
*Wishing each of you good health and happiness always*

Starting Anew.
“Instead of saying, "I'm damaged, I'm broken, I have trust issues" say "I'm healing, I'm rediscovering myself, I'm starting over.”
~ Horacio Jones
“All great beginnings start in the dark, when the moon greets you to a new day...”
~ Shannon L. Alder
“So what do we do? Anything. Something. So long as we just don't sit there. If we screw it up, start over. Try something else. If we wait until we've satisfied all the uncertainties, it may be too late."
~ Lee Iacocca”
“The quiet regrowth of a forest,
fertilized only by its own burnt flesh,
is what I think of
when I think of survival.
When we are able to look death in the face
and prosper because of it, and not just despite it,
we prove that to live is to contradict.”
~ Belle Townsend
