Lions Club Held Second Annual Game Dinner

Raynham Lions Club members enjoyed their "Annual Game Dinner" so much, they decided to it for a second time this year on Fri, Mar 21! The organization held its first "Annual Game Dinner" of the year back in January.

"130 attendees enjoyed a great evening of food, drink, raffles and comradely.

Over the week, members worked hard to prepare a variety of dishes that were enjoyed by all. We served Roast Boar, Sliced Bison, Duck Sausage, Elk Sliders, Hunters Pie, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Rolls, Carrots and Indian Pudding."

"...everyone that attended raved about what a great meal was served. People enjoyed drinks from the bar as well as a 50/50 and Gift Raffles.

Special thanks to Bridgewater-Raynham High School student Emily Doyle for her help in the kitchen and serving attendees. And to Bristol Plymouth Trade School Culinary student Nate Dykes who also worked in the kitchen, serving attendees and did a wonderful job announcing our raffles. And to all the Raynham Lions Club Members that worked so hard to present this event." Historical Tidbit

From the Report of the Raynham School Committee, April 1, 1858:

There were 8 school districts educating a total of 321 students. Each district operated one classroom educating children between the ages of 5 to 15. The school year was divided between a summer term and a winter term. Either term could last between 2 and 3 1/2 months, depending on the weather.

During the winter term in district 1, it was noted that "average attendance was seriously decreased by sickness..." which was attributed, in part, to the condition of the schoolhouse.

Senior Center Storytelling: Inge Pustelnikas, WWII Survivor

Wed, Apr 9

10a

Senior Center

Sign up in advance. "(Light Refreshments and Cofee will be served.) She is part of a little-known class of children called German Wolf Children. They wandered through the woods and swamps of East Prussia, usually Lithuania, seeking food and shelter on their own, hence the term Wolf Children. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII, and April 9th is the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Konigsberg. We are seeking to put a positive spin on the date by honoring Inge and would love to have members of the public and the media join us. We look forward to being able to share her extraordinary story to a broader audience. Inge is likely the only Wolf Child living in the United States and one of the few remaining in the world." Reposted from April Senior Center Newsletter.

Climate Can-Do: Keep the Environment Clean with How You Clean!

We want to keep our homes clean, but we want to keep the environment – home to all living creatures – clean as well. We can do both by using cleaners with less toxic chemicals. These tips can help make your cleaning routines environmentally safer:

Avoid chemicals known to be harmful to skin or respiratory systems, such as ammonia in all-purpose cleaners, non-biodegradable chemicals in dish cleaners, and bleach in laundry cleaners. These chemicals are not only harmful to you but can spread and have harmful effects on the larger environment.

Look for safer alternatives you already have at home. Here are some examples:

  • For all purpose cleaner, try vinegar or hot, soapy water on surfaces like counters and floors.
  • For dish cleaner, try making “washing soda” by mixing baking soda and water together and baking the mixture in the oven.
  • For laundry cleaner, use “washing soda” or borax instead of bleach.

Visit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website to find “Safer Choice-Certified” alternatives and keep an eye out for EPA’s “Safer Choice Label” when shopping for cleaning products.

Together, we can help make the environment cleaner by changing how we clean!

Echoes of love.

“Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?”

~ Michelle Obama

“The world is a hospital: people are patients, truth is the doctor, and love is the remedy.”

~ Matshona Dhliwayo

“Bloom where you are planted.”

~ Mary Engelbert

"What do we live for, if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"

~ George Eliot

“It always seems impossible until it's done.”

~ Nelson Mandela

The way I see it, each day we have a choice, we can work toward a better world or we can live in fear, holding on tightly to what we know.

I attempt to choose love, and I tell you, it's not easy. Fear is powerful. It can be debilitating; stop me in my tracks.

But then the love I have shared echos back and lifts me.

Loving each other and caring for our planet boundlessly is not selfless, it is selfish. Do this and then we are surrounded by love & an abundance of food, clean water and a gorgeous place to live.

So I encourage you, be selfish today, give all the love you can to everyone around you & take steps to care for our earth, the result is amazing. ~ Jacquie
