Holiday Party Deadline Extended Until End of Today

Fun time at last year's Holiday Party. Don't miss out this year.

You can still purchase tickets to the Y's Men premiere event: the annual Holiday Party being held this Wednesday, December 3 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at The Patterson Club, 1118 Cross Highway in Fairfield.

In addition to great food, music, and camaraderie, there will be a slideshow of the Y’s Men Photography Club contest entries and amazing Travel Club photos from around the world.

The deadline for buying tickets has been extended until 5:00 pm today.

This year the Merwin Mountain Band has been brought back -- an all-acoustic group with a smooth, mellow sound. They play dance tunes, Motown, country, pop, and holiday favorites. They performed for the Y's Men a few years ago and everyone loved them.

So…what else are you doing on a Wednesday in early December?

Bring a guest if you like and come enjoy a festive party, a great dinner, and a beautiful night at the Patterson Club. You’ll be glad you came—promise! 130 have already signed up — don’t miss out!

Take a look at the menu by clicking here. The price is $85.00 per person which covers dinner, tax, gratuity, and one drink.

Dress is country club appropriate with festive holiday colors and attire encouraged.

The featured speaker will be Y's Men Past President Dewey Loselle. Dewey is a survivor of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center and will share his experience with the group. He has entitled his presentation "Escape from the 63rd Floor of the WTC on 9/11."

Classical Music Society Begins Holiday Season with "Messiah"

For its final meeting of 2025, and to bring in the holiday season, the Y's Men's Classical Music Society will present a video performance of Handel's "Messiah," a traditional work performed for the holidays. The performance chosen is very much an historically accurate one, intended to mirror the way the work was originally performed, by a relatively small ensemble of instrumentals and singers. It's been said that this makes it musically transparent and even more elegant.

Because of time constraints, the majority of the work will be viewed at the meeting, with a link to the complete performance provided to attendees to enjoy at home.

The meeting will be from 2:45 to 4:15 pm on Tuesday, December 2 at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

Please email Ed Bloch at edbloch71@gmail.com to reserve your seat(s) for the meeting (for room set-up purposes only).

Stay Healthy This Winter: Vanessa Hurta Speaks This Thursday

Dr. Vanessa Hurta

Aspetuck Health District’s Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Vanessa Hurta, joins us at this Thursday morning's regular Y's Men meeting with timely guidance on staying healthy this winter.

Hurta, a Doctor of Nursing Practice and certified family nurse practitioner, leads community health programs across Westport, Weston, and Easton.

She brings nearly two decades of experience in preventive care, cardiovascular health, and public health education, including prior roles with Yale New Haven Health and Columbia University’s nursing program.

As viruses and respiratory illnesses increase with colder weather, Hurta will outline key immunizations to consider—flu, COVID-19 boosters, RSV for older adults—and practical steps for staying protected through the season.

Aspetuck Health District continues to strengthen community outreach, emergency preparedness, and vaccine availability, guided by its 2024 Community Health Improvement Plan.

Join us for an informative Q&A following Hurta’s remarks, and get clear answers on how to safeguard your health through winter.

Y's Men Thursday morning meetings are in Hoskins Hall downstairs in the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East in Westport. Coffee, donut, and bagel social hour begins at 9:00 am, business meeting at 10:00 am, speaker at 10:30 am. Come early and meet your fellow members. Guests are always welcome.

Next Life Talk Meeting Will Focus on Gratitude

The next Y's Men Life Talk meeting will be on Tuesday, December 9 at 2:00 pm in room 109 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. In the spirit of the season, the topic will be Gratitude.

It’s that time of year, when we give thanks for so many things. Yes, for family and friends, but also for more. For the roofs over our heads. For the joy of hearing children laugh off in the distance. For the fellowship the Y's Men offer. For ... fill in the blank.

It's said that gratitude is framed by four "A's": One version includes Appreciation (valuing what is positive); Approval (praising efforts); Admiration (complementing qualities); and Attention (listening patiently). Can you describe an experience relating to one or more of these “A's"?

For more information about the Life Talk group, contact Y's Man Larry Ackerman at Larry@larryackerman.com.

New Y's Men Activity: The Fraud Protection Club

We are all potential victims of hacking. The new Y's Men Fraud Protection Club will provide a comfortable setting for sharing experiences, concerns and ideas about protecting our identity and assets.

They also will discuss possible approaches to proactively securing those assets independent of government agencies and banks.

The Club will meet monthly. Anyone interested in joining should contact Jeff Schwartz at jandjschwartz@gmail.com

Separately, Capt. Jillian Cabana of the Westport Police Department's Detective Bureau, who previously has spoken to Y's Men, provided this chart from the Connecticut Intelligence Bureau as part of an article on how to prevent financial crimes against seniors.

State Prosecutor in Fotis Dulos Trial to Speak to Y's Men

Step into the heart of one of Connecticut’s most chilling and high-profile murder mysteries with Richard Colangelo Jr., former Chief State’s Attorney of Connecticut. He will be the guest speaker at the Y's Men's regular Thursday morning meeting on December 11.

Hear his behind-the-scenes account of the Fotis Dulos trial—the estranged husband accused in the haunting disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, believed to have been killed in her New Canaan home just miles from Westport. This missing-body case gripped the state with suspense, legal drama, and unanswered questions.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to uncover the twists, challenges, and pursuit of justice directly from the prosecutor who helped unravel this complex and captivating case.

Colangelo now shares his insights as an Associate Professor at the University of New Haven’s Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice.
