PEOPLE - Mizuki Tanaka: Preserving art, culture of Tokyo's public baths
Wall paintings used to be a big part of the charm of Japanese sentō (neighborhood public baths) . However, just as many other traditions, the art of the sento wall painting has fallen out of favor in modern sentos.
The Osaka born artist Mizuki Tanaka has dedicated her life to keeping this charming tradition alive and restores old sento bath art, as well as creating her own. She studied art history at Meiji Gakuin University and discovered her passion for traditional bathhouse paintigs as she started working as an apprentice to master painter Nakajima Morio in 2004.
In 2013, she started her own business with her husband, handyman Komamura Yoshikazu. They focus on bathhouses and building renovation and she spreads the attractions of the traditional sentō culture through her blog and various activities.
Her paintings can be seen in various public bathhouses, such as Misuji-Yu(Taito-ku), Hagino-Yu(Taito-ku). As the weather is getting colder, it is the perfect time to explore Tokyo’s sento variety yourself.
