Small Plantings, Larger Impact

As summer transitions into fall, outdoor spaces begin to change. Seasonal color shifts, planting areas evolve, and the way people experience these spaces changes with them. These transitions can create opportunities to introduce new visual interest without requiring major changes to an existing landscape.

Thoughtfully placed containers can extend seasonal interest, define spaces, and introduce planting where traditional landscape beds may not be practical. With the right plant selections, they can also provide valuable resources for pollinators as the growing season continues.

Making Most of Available Space

Not every site has room for dedicated planting areas. Containers can introduce greenery and seasonal color into plazas, walkways, courtyards, entrances, patios, and other developed spaces while working within existing site constraints.

Fall-blooming and regionally appropriate plants can provide nectar and pollen when other floral resources begin to decline. A few strategically placed planters can therefore contribute to the visual character of a space while becoming part of a larger network of resources for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

When Landscape and Habitat Come Together

Landscape elements can serve more than one purpose when considered as part of the larger environment. A planter can help define a pedestrian area, frame an entrance, enhance a gathering space, or introduce seasonal color while also contributing to urban biodiversity.

New York City has incorporated this approach into streetscape projects, using native plantings, bee “hotels,” and underground nesting areas to support native bee populations. Some of these installations utilize TerraCast® planters, demonstrating how everyday landscape elements can contribute to both design and environmental goals.

Designed for Changing Landscapes

Seasonal planting strategies are only part of creating outdoor spaces that continue to perform and look their best throughout the year. The elements supporting those plantings also need to withstand sun, rain, temperature changes, and everyday exposure.

TerraCast® resin planters are made with UV-stabilized material and color that runs throughout the resin, helping minimize the need for painting or refinishing. Available in a range of sizes, styles, and colors, they provide a durable foundation for seasonal planting designs that can evolve with the landscape.
