The information you provided is now being compiled and analyzed to create our new Strategic Plan.

We look forward to sharing the results with you soon!

The Politics of Librarianship

The Politics of Librarianship

Tuesday, April 29th

9:00 am - 4:00 pm

@NEFLIN HQ

"The Politics of Librarianship" explores how to navigate working with others, a skill often not taught in library school. It involves Librarian Collaboration, Diplomacy, and Activism—learning to identify key players and their priorities. How do you maintain these relationships and achieve your goals? This presentation includes two breakout sessions: "No One is an Island: Staff In Reach" and "Joyful Environments: Why I Like Coming to Work on Monday Mornings." Sometimes, what happens behind the Circ Desk is more impactful than what we do in front of it.

Meet the Trainer: Gene Coppola

After graduating with an MLS from St. John's University in NY, Gene began his library career with the Brooklyn Public Library. Over a six year period he worked at nine different branches, exposing him to a multitude of cultures throughout the borough. In 1990, Gene and his family moved to Florida where he started a 10 year stint with the Pasco County Library System. He began as the Branch Manager for the new Regency Park Branch Library and ended as the division manager for all east-side Pasco libraries. Gene was then hired as Director of Palm Harbor Library in June 2000.

In 23 years at Palm Harbor, Gene led the library through eras of technological changes, budget restrictions, staff turnovers, the Covid outbreak, and political challenges. The library emerged as a cultural destination, an innovative hub, a staff-centered workplace and a mecca for volunteerism while establishing itself as a player at the community table. Gene was recognized for his efforts by the Palm Harbor Chamber of Commerce, receiving awards for Citizen of the Year as well as Lifetime Achievement. Gene was also involved in state-wide librarianship through his Presidency of the Florida Library Association, the Tampa Bay Library Consortium and Friends of the State Library and Archives. He recently received FLA’s “Lifetime Achievement” award. After nearly 40 years of public service, Gene is very proud to call himself…a librarian.

Member Spotlight:

SJCPL's Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library

St Johns Logo

Thank you to Branch Manager Kim Odom and Youth Services Programming Coordinator Joan Meyers for a wonderful recent visit to the St. Johns County Public Library's beautiful (and busy!) Ponte Vedra Beach Branch!

Located just blocks away from the ocean, this branch reflects its surroundings by being bright and open and by taking advantage of opportunities to bring the outdoors in. Many highlights of the library, including a spacious meeting room, were provided by the active Friends of the Library of Ponte Vedra Beach, which also operates Seymour's Bookstore just inside the library's entrance.

Throughout the building, there are signs that the Ponte Vedra Beach community is deeply invested in the services and programs at their library. Patrons are encouraged to take the library mascot, Seymour the Book Worm, with them on adventures and report back with a photo. Where Has Seymour Been? As far away as Japan, Mexico City, and the Netherlands, and as close as local spots like the Beaches Museum. That's one lucky book worm!!

A collection of Memory Masters kits was funded through a 2024 NEFLIN Innovation Project award. These kits are designed to "enhance cognitive health and well-being" for the elderly/aging. Find out more about services for this group in our upcoming Adult Services Interest Group meeting on April 2nd.

The library has recently reconfigured an underutilized space into a quiet reading area that features resources for aspiring writers and small business owners.

Patrons looking for a change of scenery can step outside the library doors and explore Bird Island Park, which provides a haven not only for birds, but also for native flora and fauna. A boardwalk provides an easy walk and opportunity to explore.

We are inspired by the excellent services and beautiful spaces the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch is providing for their community!

These projects were funded either under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services or the Library Cooperative Grant program. Florida’s LSTA and LCG programs are administered by the Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2024-25, the total state and federal budgets for NEFLIN's programs are $703,693. 43% of the total costs ($303,693) are supported by federal funds, and 57% of this program ($400,000) is supported by state funds.
