August News From Councilmember Ty

Dear Neighbor,

From day one, my team and I have been focused on delivering for the Great 28. In just over nine months, we have secured major investments, brought new resources and programming to our neighborhoods, and fought to make sure District 28 receives the attention it deserves.

We have accomplished a great deal together, and I want to give you a snapshot of that progress.

Going forward, this newsletter will be released on the 15th and the 30th of every month. Not only will it keep you up to date on everything my team and I have been doing for the district, it will also be a place to share resources and announcements on upcoming events and initiatives.

As summer begins to wind down and fall starts up, I wanted to share a few of the highlights of the summer months.

Major Events in District

In the month of August, our office put on two incredible events in the district. On the West Side, we held a Freedom Block Party on Liberty Ave and Lefferts Blvd. On the East Side, we held a Summer Stage concert, the first one ever in Baisley Pond Park.

Over $1 Million in Interest to be Reduced from Rochdale Village’s Water Bill

We met with Rochdale Village and the Department of Environmental Protection in order to help shave over $1 million off of the interest on Rochdale Village’s water bill, making sure that this cost did not get passed on to residents.

$1.2 Million for Permanent Street Sweeping on Liberty Avenue

We have worked with Mayor Mamdani to mandate permanent street sweeping of Liberty Avenue. This means that, every year, the City will automatically put money into the budget to ensure that Liberty Avenue is swept and kept clean.

Millions of Dollars for Baisley Pond Park

We allocated millions of dollars for renovations and restorations of Baisley Pond Park, including renovating Sutphin Playground’s basketball court and restoring Baisley Pond’s shoreline.

More Than 1,500 Backpacks for Kids in Need

We have been working hand-in-hand with our community partners to ensure that every child has a backpack in time for the school season to start. In total, our office gave out over 1,500 backpacks to kids in need.

Keeping Our Streets and Parks Clean

We heard you when you said you were tired of seeing dirty streets! That is why we are investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in non-profit partners working directly in our neighborhoods to keep our streets and parks clean, welcoming, and well cared for. These investments will strengthen local cleanup efforts and help ensure that the public spaces our families use every day reflect the pride we have in our community.

Community Events and Services

We have hosted almost a dozen community events throughout the district, which offered something for everyone. Whether you were looking for resources from city agencies, free food bags from a food pantry, family-friendly fun, live music, or anything in between, my office delivered.

As your Councilmember, it is my pleasure to serve. Whether you need assistance with a city agency, want to voice your opinion on any upcoming pieces of legislation, or have suggestions on how to improve our neighborhood, me and my team are here to help. We can always be contacted at d28helps@council.nyc.gov or called at 718-206-2028. We also take walk-ins at our offices on the East Side (165-38A Baisley Blvd., 2nd Floor, Jamaica, NY 11434) and West Side (122-21 111th Avenue, South Ozone Park, NY 11420).

Serving District 28 is the honor of a lifetime. I am proud of what we have accomplished together in just nine months, but we are only getting started. There is so much more in store for the Great 28, so stay tuned!

With Pleasure,

Councilmember Ty Hankerson

Community, Culture, and Connection at the Freedom Block Party

One of my campaign promises was to ensure that programming from my office was more equitably split between the East and West Sides, and my Freedom Block Party was one of the ways I intended to keep this promise.

On Liberty Ave, between Lefferts Blvd and 120th street, we closed the street down from 3-6 PM  and gave it back to the people for an afternoon of fun. For the kids, we had balloon animals, coloring, games, and a photo booth. We also had many of our community partners like Indo-Caribbean Alliance, Lion’s Club of South Richmond Hill, South Queens Women’s March, Caribbean Equality Project, and Guyanese Girls Rock tabling to provide valuable resources. Shanta’s Flowers was providing bouquet making classes, and we had Tropical Isle and the Trinidadian and Tobagonian Association giving out free food and drink.

The performances brought everything together. Local Icon DJ Brandon made sure we always had something to dance to, and interspersed were performances by performers like One Tall Tassa Group, Karate Do Kyokushinkai Saikyo Dojo, The Figure Studio, Randy Reckelz Ramdin, and Devindra Pooran. The entire block and beyond was packed with people watching the stage.

While I was there, I announced one of the biggest budget wins for our district: $1.2 million to baseline permanent street sweeping of Liberty Ave. This means that, every year, the City will automatically put money into the budget to ensure that Liberty Avenue is swept and kept clean.

As Councilmember, I am so proud to represent South Ozone Park and am looking forward to bringing the Freedom Block Party back next year, bigger and better than ever.

Southside We Outside: Live Music

and Night Festival Lights Up

Baisley Pond Park

Meanwhile, over on the East Side, we did something unprecedented: we brought Summer Stage, for the first time EVER, to Baisley Pond Park.

Yes, that’s right, in 40 years of Summer Stage concerts, we never had a single performance in our district’s largest park. As Councilmember, one of my top priorities was correcting this.

City Parks Foundation, which runs Summer Stage across the City, teamed up with our office and Soapbox Presents to make it a reality. On August 15th from 5-9 PM, incredible performers had the park filled with people dancing along to the rhythm. We listened to an incredible range of performers, from homegrown talent to internationally touring artists.

Not only that, I also collaborated with BlaQue Community Cares to put on a Night Market right across from the stage. BlaQue Community Cares found and hosted local vendors from across Southeast Queens to bring their food, art, jewelry, fashion, and more to the attendees. Event-goers got the chance to support small businesses and do some shopping while listening to the concert.

I wanted to throw Summer Stage in Baisley Pond Park because my goal as Councilmember is to find fun, family friendly ways to bring the community together. With Summer Stage, I am proud to say that I succeeded, and I’m already looking forward to what more we can do for next year.
