SCS Tracer Training Classes

Managing PSM / RMP or GDC Programs for Ammonia Refrigeration:

This intensive four or five-day session is designed for operations personnel, plant managers, facility compliance personnel, and/or safety / EHS staff who are responsible for managing the PSM-related safety and compliance programs for a facility with an industrial refrigeration system. It details the various regulatory requirements associated with using anhydrous ammonia in an industrial refrigeration system (with a focus on Process Safety and Risk Management regulations). It explains what the regulations mean and why they exist. It then details how to develop and implement programs to increase the safety of the facility employees and the public, while achieving compliance with the regulations. The students will participate in developing operating procedures and in conducting a management of change and an incident investigation to reinforce the implementation concepts for these elements of the regulations. This class covers the requirements in sufficient detail for someone new to the position as well as providing a deep dive into key compliance stumbling blocks for those who are more experienced.

Ammonia Release Reporting and Release Calculations

This 2-hour, on-line course explains the various reporting requirements that may apply to an anhydrous ammonia release from your facility, including the new U.S. Chemical Safety Board reporting requirements. The class will then explain the various types of ammonia releases and the math behind calculating the loss rate for each type. The calculations will be further explained through demonstrated examples. Finally, the students will have the opportunity to become more comfortable with the calculations by performing in-class exercises.

RAGAGEP Review for Ammonia Refrigeration Facilities

The three-day course provides an overview of the Recognized and General Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP) for the Ammonia Refrigeration industry. It will first explain how regulatory officials view RAGAGEP. It will then provide an over view of the various regulations, codes, standards, and guidelines that may be applicable to an ammonia refrigeration system, both from historical and from future perspectives. In addition, certain sections of the various codes and standards will be emphasized due to the tendency for facilities and contractors to overlook them. Finally, the students will learn what they can do to comply with the regulatory requirements for documenting their selected RAGAGEP for their ammonia refrigeration system.

Bill Lape
CARO/CIRO/CRST/PSMP

Mr. Lape's experience includes all aspects of preparing a PSM program. This includes participating in Process Hazard Analyses as the team leader and recorder, and preparing qualitative risk analyses. Mr. Lape is also experienced in developing Process Safety Information packets, drafting Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, writing Standard Operating Procedures, as well as developing and conducting initial and refresher training for Ammonia Refrigeration Operators. Mr. Lape has also been involved in auditing PSM programs, performing over 20 audits since 2015, helping to ensure that facilities are keeping their employees and the public safe, while maintaining compliance with regulations.

Eric Girven
CIRO/CRST/RAI

Mr. Girven has been in the industrial refrigeration field for 30 years having spent most of his career at a large food processing facility in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania. Eric’s experience includes the following; Operator/Service technician; PSM Coordinator; Supervisor; Superintendent; Project Manager and most recently serving as a Senior Project Manager/Instructor. Eric has an extensive background in OSHA’s Process Safety Management and the EPA’s Risk Management having developed and implemented these programs for multiple customers nationwide specifically geared towards the ammonia refrigeration industry. Eric has been a long standing member of both the IIAR and RETA organizations. Eric previously served as the Vice-Chair of the Education Committee for the IIAR.

Travis Weber

CARO

Travis Weber is a Project Professional at SCS Engineers. His main area of concentration is risk analysis. He is responsible for the documentation of Process Safety Management Programs (PSM), Risk Management Programs (RMP), and California Accidental Release Prevention (CalARP) Programs for facilities using regulated substances. This work includes preparing all necessary documentation for compliance with the PSM/RMP/CalARP regulation, and modeling the potential off-site consequences of potential releases, compliance audits, and other environmental study projects for municipal and private clients.
