Class Profile : IB Math

Developing students’ logical, critical, and creative thinking skills, and their patience and persistence in problem solving, all while cultivating an appreciation for the elegance and power of math -- these are some of the aims of the IB Diploma Programme Standard Level Math class. The math curriculum includes algebra, statistics, probability, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
One thing that sets IB apart from other advanced placement classes is the type and format of the assessments. The format for the internal assessments involve the collection of information or the generation of measurement -- and the subsequent analysis and evaluation. It's a project where students look at unfamiliar situations. They must organize and analyze information, draw conclusions, test the validity of those conclusions, and then consider the scope and limitations of those conclusions.
External assessments evaluated by IB consist of short and extended-response questions. Students must be able to use math facts, concepts, and techniques in a variety of contexts.

The skills students will develop, an overview of the curriculum, and a description of the assessments are outlined in the IB Diploma Program Subject Brief.  The Subject Brief for Mathematics can be found here.
Global Connection: Ukraine

Providing Cavaliers with the opportunity to meet and collaborate with people around the world is part of the Purcell Marian experience. This year we are collaborating with the staff and students of School #116 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Our delegation of 4 students -- Quin Rubick, Logan Opals, Dante Evans and Catherine Stuebbe -- will travel to eastern Ukraine to spend a week at School #116, accompanied by Bob Herring and Ann Wittenauer. While in Kharkiv, they will live with the families of students and attend classes.
In April, a delegation of 10 students and 2 staff members from School #116 will spend a week on Hackberry. They will attend a number of classes, sharing information about current events as well as the history of Ukraine.

The connection with School #116 was made possible by the Cincinnati-Kharkiv Sister City Partnership. Bob Herring, a member of the CKSCP Board, was in Kharkiv last year and met the administration of School #116 which was very much interested in the possibility of a student exchange with Purcell Marian.

Stay tuned -- you will be able to follow their adventure in Kharkiv on Purcell Marian's Facebook p age !
