Seasonal Safety Reminders

Warmer weather has settled in, which means that your staff need to be aware of different considerations when it comes to working safely.

  • Is anyone working outside? Speak with your staff about sun protection, appropriate clothing for the weather, drinking plenty of water, and how to watch out for symptoms of heat exhaustion.

  • Is someone working in the field? Ensure they understand how to safely work alone. A hazard assessment needs to be completed before going into a new environment.

  • What is the air quality? Some regions of the NWT are seeing poor air quality from wildfire smoke. Always keep an eye on air quality and if it is bad, limit time outside and avoid strenuous activity.

Employers, managers, and supervisors: it is your responsibility to make sure that workers understand the risks in their workplace. Visit our website for information on these topics and more. Always personalize the information for your workplace.

Struck-By Injuries: Identifying Hazards

Although some occupations have a higher risk for struck-by incidents, it’s important to remember that these incidents can happen to any worker in any job setting. It could be anything from hitting a finger with a hammer to being struck by a vehicle.

Follow the WSCC’s Hazard Assessment and Controls section of the Workplace Safety Planning Guide to identify hazards that could lead to struck-by incidents such as:

  • Heavy objects on high shelves.
  • Damaged tools or equipment that could break or cause flying objects.
  • Tools or heavy objects being used at heights that are not secured.

For more information, visit our Struck-By Safety Spotlight page.
