ONE Thing

Hi Fit School Friend!

I love introducing you to experts in a variety of fields. I've asked that they each share just ONE thing that they think can make the biggest difference in your physical, financial, nutritional, and/or mental health.

So, here we go. I introduce to you...

Sharon Stone running her first marathon and qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Sharon Stone's ONE Thing

Volunteering - a Playdate for Grown-ups

We probably all remember our young'un days when a playdate with a friend was all it took. Give us a crate of toys or a mound of dirt, and two creative minds could imagine, create, and giggle the day away. As adults, though, we can get stuck in routine. The same co-workers. The same chores. The same route to the store every week. Routine is comfortable, but sometimes our worlds get a little too small.

Here's my challenge: Close your eyes for a moment and picture an activity you love or a cause that tugs at your heart. Now open your eyes (and another browser window) and find an organization that supports it. Love hiking? Volunteer with a group like Recreation Northwest to help build and maintain trails. Passionate about helping girls grow into confident, resilient women? Reach out to the YMCA and volunteer with Girls on the Run.

Seriously - take the first step. Some opportunities are just a few hours on a Saturday and leave you smiling all weekend. Others become a weekly highlight that gets you out of the house and into your community. We all know volunteering boosts happiness and purpose. So quit thinking about it.

Do it now.

About Sharon Stone

Despite the name, there is no famous actress here. Just a humble word-playful runner, walker, animal-lover and immature older adult who laughs too loud. I believe that we adults tend to take ourselves too seriously and need to pull out that inner-child more often than we do. My life goal is to work less and play more, and ideally, to turn my work into play. I do what I can…AND I volunteer often!
