National Safe Place Week 2025

National Safe Place (NSP) Week is celebrated nationally during the third full week in March each year. This recognized week honors Safe Place, an outreach and prevention program for youth in crisis. NSP Week serves to recognize the many valued partners who work together to provide immediate help and safety for all young people. It is a dedicated time to acknowledge licensed Safe Place agencies like Pendleton Place, Safe Place locations, and community partners and volunteers. These individuals and groups are the pillars of strength that support the national safety net for youth.

When a young person in the Greenville area is in crisis, they can speak to staff at the YMCA, Greenlink Transit System, or QuikTrip Gas Stations who will call Pendleton Place's 24/7 hotline. One of our many important resources, we will make sure the youth makes it to us safely so we can help them with their next step.

50th Anniversary Milestone Moment

One day in 1974 Caroline Johnston, Tunky Riley, and Sheila Lee were speaking with a friend in law enforcement. During that conversation, he told them that children recently removed from their homes and waiting to enter foster care were spending the night in the cells at the county jail. Finding this completely unacceptable, these three women got to work with fellow members of the Junior League of Greenville to raise funds for what would become Pendleton Place. By November 1975, Pendleton Place opened its doors, becoming the first of its kind in South Carolina. Here, children entering foster care were welcomed into a warm, safe, and loving atmosphere—stark contrast to the cold, scary confines of a jail cell.

When we opened our doors in 1975, we became a safe haven for the most vulnerable among us—children from birth to age 17 who deserved nothing less than safety and care from a supportive community. While our programs continue to evolve to meet the most pressing needs of our community, our core purpose remains the same: Pendleton Place is a place where youth are safe, seen, and cared for, where they receive all the support they need to soar into adulthood.

Stay tuned throughout 2025 as we reflect on 50 years of impact to our community! We are thrilled to celebrate and honor our legacy while looking forward to the next 50 years.

Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month—a time to celebrate the resilience, leadership, and impact of women throughout history. At Pendleton Place, this celebration holds special meaning as we honor the incredible women who founded our organization 50 years ago, and the dedicated women who continue to drive our mission forward today.

From the visionary leaders who laid the foundation for Pendleton Place to the compassionate team members who serve our community each day, women have been at the heart of our work. Their dedication ensures that children, youth, and families receive the support they need to build brighter futures.

This month, we recognize and celebrate these women—past and present—who have shaped Pendleton Place into the beacon of hope it is today. Thank you for your passion, strength, and unwavering commitment to making a difference!
