WDB Grant Participants Graduate at Oneida County Jail
WDB grant program Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) recognized seven grant partcipants recently at the Oneida County Jail for completing “Courage to Change “ interactive journals.
WDB Project Director Christina Spagnuolo said, "Below is a little about what the journals entail and the work the clients put in to accomplish graduating:
"Our curriculum is structured to guide participants through a series of journals, each serving a distinct purpose in their journey towards rehabilitation and reintegration. The "Getting Started Journal" familiarizes participants with the program's framework, roles of support team members, and strategies for self-change. The "Responsible Thinking Journal" dives deeper into the connection between participants' thinking patterns and their involvement in the criminal justice system, encouraging introspection and skill development in decision-making and problem-solving."
"Throughout the program, participants engage in group activities, complete assigned homework, and participate in open discussions to foster a supportive and conducive learning environment. The duration of the program typically spans four/five weeks, with classes held three to four days per week, tailored to individual needs.
"Completion of this program signifies a significant milestone for each participant, demonstrating their commitment to personal growth and readiness to reintegrate into society."
WDB Lead In-Facility Counselor Loretta Young, said, "We had 11 participants from our Pathway Home 2 grant (PH2) grant program, hosted at Oneida County Correction Facility, who completed the OSHA 30 class on May 31, 2024. This training is for construction and general industry, prepares workers for workplace safety and health risks avoiding common hazards, understanding workers' rights, employer responsibilities, and more. They earn an official OSHA 30 card from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) – a common requirement for employment in construction and other industries.
"The class is designed to prepare you to seek/search for employment once you are released back to the community and your surrounding areas. The program’s goal is to help you succeed. But it's all up to you, you must want and do something different."
In total 29 inmates received certificates of achievement or completion.

WDB Staff Graduate from Leadership Mohawk Valley
WDB Disability Resource Coordinator, Nicole Sortino, Business Services Representative Caitlin McSorley, and Case Manager Special Projects Mary Katherine Moylan recently graduated from Leadership Mohawk Valley (LMV), Class of 2024.
The Center for Leadership Excellence (CLE) connects and inspires leaders from across the Mohawk Valley to think and lead in new and innovative ways to make a positive difference in our region.
Ms Sortino says, "During the 10-month Leadership Mohawk Valley program, we engaged with over 50 community leaders and explored 15 local businesses. These interactions sparked thought-provoking discussions that challenged our notions of leadership, our own abilities, and how we could amplify our community impact.
"Through unity and teamwork, we accomplished one of the largest community impact projects in LMV's history: the Art and Recovery Café for the Center for Family Life and Recovery in Rome. This initiative aims to provide a safe and creative space for youth in recovery, harnessing the therapeutic benefits of art to support their healing journey.
Ms. Moylan, Ms. McSorley, and I are incredibly proud of this accomplishment and grateful for the opportunity. Ms. McSorley was head of the fundraising committee for our Community Capstone project and raised well over $15,000 in donations, both in-kind and monetary. Ms. Moylan was the Committee Lead for the Art Showroom Committee, and was then voted as Class Representative. She delivered an articulate and beautiful speech at our Center for Leadership Excellence Commencement Ceremony."
"The friendships and connections this program has provided will undoubtedly be instrumental in our future careers. We are proud to be graduates of the program and look forward to continuing our roles as leaders within the Mohawk Valley."
Congratulations, Nicole, Mary Katherine, and Caitlin!!

WDB Regional Apprenticeship Development and Readiness (RADAR) Project Grant Project Participants Graduate
The Workforce Development Board is pleased to announce the graduation of Cohort 2 of Advance to Apprenticeship (A2A). A2A is an employment initiative through the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities to improve the success of Apprenticeship programs for people with and without disabilities within the manufacturing industry. This would not have been possible without the collaboration of the Workforce Development Board's RADAR grant, The Manufacturers Association of Central New York (MACNY), and Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC). We would also like to thank Nicole Sortino, the Disability Resource Coordinator from the Workforce Development Boards NYSCION grant, who graciously offered her time and support to instruct this group of job seekers. Students had the opportunity to apply for an interview with Danfoss, Wolfspeed, Bartell, Square One Coating, Hartman Enterprises, and Indium. We are excited to share that one of our students has already accepted a position with Square One Coating, and is looking forward to starting their career in Manufacturing this week! It has been a joy to see the growth and overall success of each participant in the program, and we look forward to supporting them in their journey to becoming Registered Apprentices.

WDB Pathway Home 2 Grant Participant Success Story
Leroy emigrated to America from Jamica in 2021. He has a language barrier but since day one in our program, he has been motivated to succeed. During the time he has been enrolled with Pathway Home 2 he has completed OSHA 10 (a 10-hour safety course designed by OSHA to cover safety basics for workers in high-risk industries) and OSHA30. (This 30-hour course provides instruction on a variety of safety subjects and in-depth, industry-specific training intended for supervisors and workers with safety and health responsibility.) He also took a comprehensive Asbestos class at MVCC,(This class is designed as an introduction to Asbestos and the potential risk it poses. The curriculum included instruction on Asbestos properties and health effects, emergency procedures to follow if Asbestos is accidentally distributed and Asbestos dust or fiber is released, and how to avoid risk from Asbestos. Students were shown the proper clothing required when dealing with Asbestos and how to decontaminate after working with Asbestos.) Leroy passed the class with flying colors and received his NYSDOH and USEPA Asbestos certifications.
In May, Leroy was hired by a local employer and is making $20.00 an hour!

Congratulations, Leroy!!

"Real Talk" - A Community Topic Meeting
All are welcome.
Oneida County Re-Entry Taskforce Program (OCTRF) Credible Messenger, Conant Rose, started a Community Topic meeting, sponsored by the Workforce Development Board, called Real Talk, whose purpose is to get people in the community to start thinking about ways that they can implement constructive change in their lives by looking at their attitudes, feelings, and behaviors and believing that a better life for themselves is possible. Here is one of our meeting fliers. We have had incredible community interest and involvement so much so that we had to relocate to a bigger room. Last night’s meeting was standing room only; and we believe this is something other Credible Messengers can implement in their own communities to give back and lead by example as role models for those at the bottom.

Oneida County Re=Entry Taskforce Program SUCCESS!
OCRTF is proud to announce that one of our clients, Alyssa has fully taken advantage of RTF guidance and resources and is about to graduate from Real Life Rosies, a program sponsored by the WDB in partnership with MVCC that trains local women for jobs in manufacturing. Alyssa was released in 2023 and did not avail herself of the RTF’s support. She quickly found herself back in the street life and was in a car with her friend when he was shot. Windshield glass penetrated Alyssa’s eye, causing long-term damage. She could have been killed. This event caused Alyssa to reevaluate her circumstances and choices, and Alyssa enrolled herself into outpatient substance abuse services, got with the RTF, and completed Ready, Set, Work, a skill-based job readiness program. After that, she counseled with OCRTF Director Veronica Miller and Credible Messenger Conant Rose and enrolled in Real Life Rosies and will complete in July with multiple offers in the semi-conductor manufacturing field. Alyssa is a true RTF success story. Congratulations, Alyssa! This is proof that RTFs are making a difference in real people’s lives!
Congratulations, Alyssa!

OHM BOCES New Visions Program
The New Visions program at Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES offers select college bound seniors the unique opportunity to participate in internships throughout their senior year of high school. Students apply to participate in one of the following career clusters: Business Management, Communications, Education, Engineering Technology, Legal Professions, or Veterinary Science.
Students participate in up to four seven week internships each year, Mondays through Thursdays from approximately 8:45 to 10:45 each morning. The goal is for students to gain experience in the career field they are interested in pursuing; this allows them to confirm their passion or determine if other paths better suit their interest and skills. In addition, students develop soft skills and network in the community.
If you are interested in hosting a New Visions student or learning more about the New Visions program, please contact: Cassie Conway (cconway@oneida-boces.org) or visit: https://www.oneida-boces.org/domain/260
