PDF-Xchange Editor, An Adobe Alternative

In this edition of Tech Talk News, we will look at an alternative to the Adobe Acrobat reader program that most people use by default. The program is called PDF-XChange and there is a viewer and an editor version of the product available.

What is a PDF?

The PDF file format was developed in the 90s and stands for "Portable Document Format". Of course, the company that created this file format was Adobe. It was extremely innovative as it allows for things to not only be secure and small in file size, but also enables documents to be displayed without formatting differences on a device to device basis. With so many people using PDFs and the company having created the format, it's no wonder that almost every device has some sort of Adobe technology on it today. In most cases, Adobe Acrobat Reader or perhaps a web browser is what PCs will have set as their default program for PDF files.

What are the benefits?

Similar to Adobe's Reader and DC, there is a free and a paid version of PDF-Xchange (titled Viewer and Editor). One of the major selling point is that the program is more compact and doesn't need the same level of resources to load PDFs. This can be good for those who prefer faster speeds. Another is that the free version of PDF-Xchange allows for some PDF editing to be done (thought the paid version will be required for more advanced edits such as splitting up pages or combining multiple PDF documents).

Another key difference is that while Adobe has moved to a subscription model for all their programs and will require you to pay monthly fees in order to keep editing PDFs, PDF-Xchange allows for a one-time payment option. It's editing abilities can sometimes be limited, but the cost of this program is about the same as you might pay for just a few months of the similar Adobe subscriptions.
