A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Cape Fear Community College
|
|
Greetings from Jim Morton - CFCC President
|
|
Dear Sea Devil Community,
Greetings! I hope this email finds everyone well and enjoying the cooler weather!
This year is coming to a close very quickly. It’s been a tough year for us all. Through all the challenges we’ve collectively experienced and despite all the twists and turns 2020 has thrown our way, many good things are happening.
I’d like to recognize CFCC’s incredible faculty and staff for their dedication and hard work, and for their commitment to the success of our students. COVID-19 has changed the way we interact with our student body. Faculty has implemented new learning models to provide our students with exemplary training. Staff has adjusted to assisting students virtually and in-person. We are employing new technologies that are helping us connect better with our students. Read more about how we're incorporating new technology to better serve our students.
Our students have been so gracious and understanding as we have all worked to adapt to these new styles of teaching and support. We are all growing together as we make things happen in this changing environment. Through it all, we’re thriving.
Enrollment for our 2nd mini session, which begins October 19, is very strong. A short-term winter session will also begin November 30th. We are focused on providing options for students that work for their schedules and lifestyle. Flexibility is more important than ever.
Another item of note - we are very proud to share that our Associate Degree in Nursing program has once again ranked #1 in North Carolina by nursingprocess.org. Congratulations to our Health Sciences faculty, staff, and students who make this happen again and again!
Many more exciting things are happening, including our faculty art show, our partnership with the City of Wilmington to help replenish our urban forest, and a new partnership with UNCW to help grow our Cyber Security workforce, just to name a few!
Go Sea Devils!

Telecommunicator (TCC) Certification Grads
September 18, 2020
|
|
We are proud to celebrate the graduation of our most recent group of Telecommunicator Certification Course (TCC) students.
This program is offered to telecommunicators from across the region. The state-mandated course load requires 47 hours of instruction, but these students went above and beyond and completed 54 hours of instruction. Way to go!👏
"Telecommunicators play a very pivotal role in the law enforcement community by being the lifeline relaying information between the caller and the responding law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel," said Director of Law Enforcement Programs Tim Fuss. "Congratulations to these telecommunicators and best of luck as they further their law enforcement careers."

Wilmington Tree Initiative
September 25, 2020
|
|
We are so excited to join the City of Wilmington as a partner of the Wilmington Tree Initiative. Our goal is to increase the tree canopy in the Wilmington area.
This past year, we invested in our own landscaping crew to help maintain our beautiful campus and the areas that surround it.
We also:
- Started our own in-house seedling program, using native seedlings
- Planted 160 seedlings (100 bald cypress + 60 other bee-friendly hardwoods)
Planting these trees helps with wetland remediation and also adds beauty to our campuses. We plan to add more trees this coming year. In January, we'll receive and begin planting:
- 350 native pine seedlings - both Loblolly and Long Leaf varieties
- 120 oak and hickory seedlings
"By adding native trees to our campus, we’re not only creating an even more beautiful and welcoming environment for our students but also investing in our community for years to come. We’re also creating awareness of the importance of the natural world in our daily lives and promoting environmental stewardship in the Cape Fear region." — CFCC President Jim Morton

CFCC & UNCW Receive $196,782 Department of Defense Cyber Scholarship Program Grant
|
|
There is a great need for well-educated IT professionals with on-the-job experience. We're excited to collaborate with UNCW on this Cybersecurity Apprenticeship initiative, made possible by a $196,782 grant from the Department of Defense Cyber Scholarship program. The program will provide a work-based learning experience for UNCW cybersecurity students and an incentive for CFCC Cyber Crime Technologies grads to continue their studies at UNCW.
The program starts with pilot students in February 2021. Student apprentices will be selected from CFCC students who are currently in the CFCC Cyber Crime Technology program. Students will be assessed by UNCW faculty, staff, and CFCC faculty for interest, ability, and perceived potential for being an effective member of a cybersecurity team.
“We have a wonderful, motivated team of UNCW faculty from the computer science department and the Congdon School, ITS staff, and CFCC faculty that are very interested in student success. This grant will be a great boost to our ability to support them.” — Ron Vetter, Faculty Member - UNCW Department of Computer Science
“The apprenticeship program is part of our response to the large cybersecurity talent gap that currently exists in the United States and throughout the rest of the developed world.”— Greg Vandergriff, Program Director - CFCC Cyber Crime Technology
