Customer Water Service Lines Are Showing Multiple Pipe Materials Missed by Potholing

Customer Owned Water Services Found With Multiple Pipe Materials

The EPA and Data Scientists initially thought that it would be easy to identify lead pipes, especially by digging test holes to determine whether a magnet would stick to a pipe.

Fast forward to today. Over a year after the Lead and Copper Rule Revision (LCRR), mandated inventories are consistently revealing the presence of multiple pipe materials on the Customer side of the meter.

Introduction of SWORDFISH Streamlines Water Line Inspection

There is no dispute. After hundreds of inspections and multiple large utility benchmark trials, SWORDFISH by Electro Scan is the undisputed leader in pipe material identification.

Inspection of Customer Water Lines Show Multiple Materials

But, as SWORDFISH is increasingly being purchased to assess customer side water service lines, more lines are showing 'multiple' pipe materials.

That is not a surprise. With over $1 trillion of buried plumbing from the property line to the house, data metrics are showing a hodge-podge of underground pipe line materials.

Missed by single or double potholes being dug on very irritated homeowner front yards, it seems that a lot of money appears to be wasted on getting incomplete results.

Especially if homeowners get the right to question initial inventory categories, only to find the utility was wrong in their pipe material assignment.

PROPOSED LCRI REGULATION

Pipe Disturbances From Potholing & Shut-offs to Require Customer Notice

Pipe Disturbance from Potholing Requires Notice

After years allowing hydro-excavation and potholing, the EPA Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) has acknowledged the possibility of pipe disturbance that risks higher lead concentrations to enter a customer's home. 3,000 to 5,000 psi hitting water pipes can cause major vibrations.

Disturbance from Valve Shut-Off/Turn-On, Common

As most water veterans and plumbers have known, the simple action of shutting off and turning back on water to a customer's house can cause a major internal gush of water that can knock loose internal pipe debris, calcification, bio films, and lead particulates into drinking water pipes.

PROPOSED LCRI REGULATION

Partial Lead Pipe Replacements Prohibited With Few Exceptions in Updated Regulation

Many investor-owned and municipal utilities removed lead lines, without checking the pipe material from the property line to the house (customer's side of the meter). Will utilities have to identify all of these replacement by street address and commit to replacing the customer's water line? Good question to ask the EPA during their 60-Day Comment Period for the LCRI.

IN-FIELD REPORTING IN MINUTES

NO LEAD

Automatically determine service lines are lead-free with SWORDFISH. Measuring the change in electrical resistivity, just like you found in high school when you studied the periodic table, give 100% verification.

GALVANIZED & COPPER

All elements have a unique electrical resistivity. Since measurements are taken every .4 seconds as the SWORDFISH probe is pushed thru a pipe, multiple materials can be found.

LEAD

The deadliest pipe material are automatically found using SWORDFISH, with a secondary swab test of the probe confirm all results within minutes. Representing a 100% accuracy, results are available in minutes.

PROPOSED LCRI REGULATION

Customers Able to Call For Re-Inspection If They Question Initial Inventory

The LCRI recommends that a Customer's service line be re-inspected if they disagree with initial categorization.

Expect real estate agents to recommend to home sellers to have water utility re-inspect water service lines, Buy an Electro Scan's SWORDFISH for your crews to show homes are lead-free.

Are Your Local Schools Lead-Free? Are You Sure?

Don't our children deserve to drink water that is not contaminated?

ABC News recently reported that 77% of all test samples from 7,758 school water systems had some level of lead contamination; 16% in the double digits and 6% exceeding EPA maximums.

Utility-Owned & Private Property Water Services Must Be Inspected

Unfortunately, your GIS may not be much help since both public & private property water services must be inventoried and assessed for lead pipes.

And, no utility wants to dig up a customer's front yard, assuming you excavate a large enough trench to test the pipe. The award-winning SWORDFISH is the answer!
