One Connection Can Change a Future: Lucresse's Story

At the heart of Future Link’s program is the powerful connection between first-generation college students and volunteer professionals who guide them toward academic and career success. Serving as Mentors, Career Coaches, tutors, and informational interviewers, volunteers share their expertise and often form life-changing, lasting connections.

Lucresse joined Future Link in 2021 and quickly took advantage of Future Link's program services, working with a Mentor for over four years. With her Mentor’s support, she transferred from Montgomery College to the University of Maryland, College Park, where she solidified her passion for criminal justice. With numerous Future Link tuition scholarships and an internship at the State’s Attorney’s Office, a Future Link partner, Lucresse built a strong foundation of career-based skills.

In 2024 as a college senior, Lucresse began working with Career Planner Janice, a retired attorney. Together, they refined Lucresse’s professional story, application materials, and job search strategy. “I never wanted to disappoint Janice because of how much effort she was investing in me,” Lucresse recalls. “She encouraged me to keep informed of current events, to follow up with professionals, and to always be prepared.”

Lucresse’s proactive nature led her to take advantage of staffing changes during her internship at Governor Wes Moore’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy with the Criminal Injuries and Compensation Board. Lucresse's persistence, professionalism, and self-advocacy led to a full-time job offer. Janice applauded this outcome: “Lucresse has an amazing personality and work ethic. Through her perseverance and willingness to network, combined with the terrific job she did in her internship, she made this future for herself.” Now preparing for law school, Lucresse knows she has a lifelong advocate in Janice.

Consider making your impact as a volunteer or donor at Future Link. There is no greater reward than transforming a young person’s life.
