About our Guest Speakers

Dr. Jeff Smith : Jeff is a third generation McCall family whose grandparents originally started a fabric business in 1954 on Lake Street. His father purchased land and built a cabin in the Secesh in 1968 and Jeff and his family have a condo near the golf course. Jeff served in the Air Force for 30 years and retired in 2015 as a Colonel. He is the owner of Thinkenomics LLC , a company that assists organizations develop strategic plans, engineer healthy culture, and assess overall business operations. As a keynote speaker, Jeff has traveled around the globe and taught over 100,000 participants both leadership and critical thinking skills. Jeff holds a BS and MS in Mathematics, MS in Strategic Studies, MS in Military History, and a PhD focused on Organizational Psychology.

Melissa Shelby : "I've been working as a photographer for as long as I can remember. My first job was as a contract photographer for races and frat parties way down south at Auburn University. Yes, you read that right! After a few decades of criss-crossing the continent for work, I found myself right back in the thick of photography. I've been taking photos in one way, shape, or form ever since. Through my photography you can probably tell I'm a little bit obsessed with color - sharp, clear, vibrant color.  The place I find all that color is in the woods, or by the lake, or on top of the mountain. The great wild, rugged expanse that is known as Idaho is now my home. It makes for an amazing reintroduction to the lower 48.   I've found my happy place outside of Alaska and it's the tiny perfect mountain town of McCall. Just my kind of photo backdrop."

SBA OFFERS FOUR THINGS BUSINESSES CAN DO RIGHT NOW
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) programs under the CARES Act tomorrow, April 23, 2020.

While we wait, the SBA offers four things businesses can be doing right now to be prepared.

  • Prep for possible additional Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funding: During this interim time between PPP appropriations, businesses can continue to work with their lenders on possible future PPP options. The best way to find a PPP lender is to start with your existing bank or lending institution. If they don’t plan to offer PPP loans should more funding become available, businesses can search online for eligible PPP lenders or contact their local SBA district office.

  • Create a business plan for now and life after COVID-19: The SBA Resource Partner Network – which includes Small Business Development Centers, SCORE Mentors and Women's Business Centers – has experienced business advisers who are guiding businesses through this crisis and helping them plan what their business will look like on the other side of this outbreak. SBA Resource Partners provide business resiliency readiness webinars and virtual one-on-one advising at no-cost to small businesses.

US CHAMBER TO HOST VARIOUS VIRTUAL
EVENTS FOR BUSINESSES

Guides and Resources from the U.S. Chamber
The U.S. Chamber continues to create, update, and evolve its various guides and resources to continue bringing you and your members the information you need during this difficult time. We encourage you to continue utilizing and sharing the following items with your members as you see fit:

U.S. Chamber Summary on Guidance Issued by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
To help you and your members better understand the recent guidance issued by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and in coordination with the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , the U.S. Chamber has created a  summary  outlining what employers need to know about protecting their workers as they maintain or resume operations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The summary describes OSHA's comments and addresses three of the main questions:
  1. How should employers protect their employees?
  2. Do employers have to record cases of COVID-19 on their injury logs?
  3. How will OSHA conduct enforcement related to Coronavirus?
"SUPPORT LOCAL GEMS" THIS FRIDAY, APRIL 24 IN HONOR OF OUR IDAHO BUSINESSES
An important message from Idaho Tourism for supporting local businesses this Friday, April 24th:

With the severe impact of COVID-19 on Idaho small businesses, it is more important than ever before to support the shops, restaurants and other establishments that play a critical role in our communities and state economy. With this in mind, Idaho Commerce and Visit Idaho are partnering with U.S. Senator for Idaho Jim Risch to launch Support Local Gems — an all-day event on Friday, April 24, encouraging Idahoans to support local small businesses affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. The initiative invites Idahoans to show support by shopping online at their favorite stores, purchasing gift cards, ordering take-out or delivery from local restaurants, writing a review online, posting on social media about a local business or simply saying thank you.

After the one-day event, Visit Idaho will extend the effort over the course of 10 weeks to ensure the support of Idaho small businesses stays top of mind for Idahoans. To amplify awareness, we’ll be sharing resources as well as the stories of Idaho communities, citizens, and small businesses on visitidaho.org and across our social media channels. Additionally, Idaho Commerce and Visit Idaho will share highlights and stories of the initiative from across the state through regular email updates.

To make Support Local Gems a success, we need your help. Tapping into the partnerships and relationships you have in your communities is crucial to ensuring all Idahoans are aware of and support the initiative.

How your organization can Support Local Gems:
  • Follow @visitidaho on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
  • Be sure to tag @visitidaho and #SupportLocalGems when sharing news about the initiative on your posts so that we can see and share them.
  • Let your audience know about Support Local Gems and encourage them to share their own stories of supporting Idaho small businesses.
  • Are you already coordinating a campaign to support local small businesses? Please tag @visitidaho on your posts and we’ll share your stories on our channels.
  • If a “shop small” campaign doesn’t already exist in your community/region, consider starting one to inform and encourage community members looking for the best ways to support small businesses.

Need inspiration for social media posts? We have you covered with sample posts, graphics and logos to use throughout the Support Local Gems initiative. Resources are available in the toolkit on the Support Local Gems webpage: https://visitidaho.org/local-gems/

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. Supporting Idaho’s small businesses and economy is important to all of us. Thank you for joining in the effort to ensure our local businesses survive this challenging time.
