Name: Joshua Weeden

Title: Assistant Principal

Students may call you: Mr. Weeden or Mr. W

What brought you to the Winston School:

I am excited to join the administrative team at the Winston School. I started my career as a behavior intervention specialist with new alternatives. My primary role was to support students' transition from the foster care system to a more traditional educational setting. I then worked as an education specialist in the San Diego Unified School District. This primarily included teaching and co-teaching math at the middle and high school levels. I was also a middle school Associated Student Body (ASB) and activities lead. I have also served as an assistant principal at Montgomery Middle School and Naranca Elementary School in El Cajon. I am excited to support the unique mission and vision of the Winston School and am thrilled for all the possibilities the next year holds.

Hometown: El Cajon

Favorite Sport: I played football in high school. I am a huge lacrosse fan and attend almost every San Diego Seals game. I am an avid bowler. I also love to watch baseball; my favorite teams are the Padres, Red Sox, and the Savannah Bananas.

Music: I have an eclectic taste in music; I play drums and collect all music formats. My favorite band is Noise Ratchet.

Books: The Goosebumps books have always been a favorite. I also love reading non-fiction books about religion, mythology, and strange, unexplained occurrences.

In your free time: I love to go to garage sales and thrift stores and "treasure hunt" for VHS tapes, old-school video games, and music. I also like to use my free time to organize and enjoy my collections. I also attend as many concerts as I can afford.

Fun fact or anything you want to share: I have three kids. A 19-year-old named Caleb who recently became an Eagle Scout. He plays the trumpet and has marched for gold in Drum Corps International (DCI). He currently plays semi-pro lacrosse for the SoCal Devils. I have a 16-year-old Skylar who loves the arts and participates in Christian Youth Theater. She also has her own TEDx Talk that you can search on YouTube, which speaks about her own disability and how theater has helped her. I also have an 8-year-old, Harper, who loves to sing and do gymnastics.

Name: Bennett Poiset

New Role: Counselor.

What should the students call you? Bennett works for me!

What brought you to Winston: I have heard a lot about Winston and its wonderful students, faculty, and culture. I have worked under Dr. Schere at another site and he has nothing but positive things to say about Winston. I love working with students and helping developing individuals grow and deal with the challenges they face, so it is the perfect fit.

Hometown: San Diego

Favorite Sport: Soccer

In my free time, I love to cook for my friends and family.

Fun Fact: I am Buddhist and am always trying to learn more about Buddhism and meditation.

Winston Summer School Students Enjoy a Fun-Filled Morning of Diverse Activities

Today at the Winston Summer School, students enjoyed a refreshing break from their studies with a variety of engaging morning activities. They had four exciting options to choose from:

  1. Walk to the Eagle: Students explored the scenic trails, appreciating the natural beauty and getting some fresh air by stopping at the sunset seat of the infamous carved eagle.
  2. Field Games: They could choose between playing Four Square, soccer, or basketball, engaging in friendly competition while honing their athletic skills.
  3. Art: For those inclined towards creativity, an art session was available, allowing them to express themselves through various artistic mediums.
  4. Lawn Games: Students played cornhole, Bocci Ball, ping pong, and Giant Jenga, enjoying a mix of fun and strategy in a relaxed outdoor setting.
