  • Choose 31-Dec-2023 to make a payment on your 2023 return.

💡 Tax tip of the month

How to file a return for a deceased taxpayer

When you lose a loved one, filing a tax return may seem like a distant concern, but it's important part of handling their affairs.

If you've had a family member pass away, we can help you understand how to file their final tax return.

Here's what you need to know:

  • A surviving spouse or appointed representative normally files the final tax return for the deceased.
  • When filing the SC return, check the box for "deceased" next to the appropriate Social Security number.
  • The filing status on the SC return should match the filing status you chose on the federal return.

Final returns for deceased taxpayers are due by the April 15 deadline unless the surviving spouse or appointed represented files for an extension.
