Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
I was joined yesterday by Dr. Cecelia Adams, officials from Toledo Public Schools, and Owens Community College, along with our police and fire chiefs, to officially announce PS419, a new public-safety educational track designed to prepare TPS high schoolers for careers in public safety.

This program has been at least six years in the making. It is an incredible example of collaboration to meet the needs of young Toledoans and our safety forces. PS419 includes an invaluable one-on-one mentorship component that will be provided by current police officers and firefighters.

When our youth interact with a firefighter or law enforcement, we want that to be a positive experience. We want them to understand that these are men and women who live in our community and serve our community. Any opportunity to get professionals in the safety field interacting with high schoolers will have long-term benefits as students go through life and we evolve as a city.

Toledo Public Schools and Owens will collaborate beginning this fall on an instructional program that features College Credit Plus courses that align with a public-safety career pathway. Students will receive high school and college credit for classes along with qualifying for an EMT-B certificate — an entry certificate for Emergency Medical Technicians — upon graduation.

You can watch the announcement we made from Bowsher High School at this link.
Mortgage Assistance
I want to remind homeowners who have been impacted by the pandemic, that the application period for the Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program, has been extended through April 30. This federally funded program will help 150 low- to moderate-income households in Toledo.
COVID-19 Vaccine
I was thrilled this week to get my second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. As you can see in the picture below, it was painless and easy. I feel relieved that I will now be fully vaccinated two weeks after I received that dose Wednesday.

I again encourage everyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine to make sure you can be there for your family and so we can go back to enjoying events like baseball, concerts, and more.

I want to thank Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine for visiting Toledo yesterday.

The governor gave his biweekly COVID-19 announcement from the University of Toledo, where he highlighted increasing cases in northwest Ohio.

Lucas County right now has the highest case rate in the state, at 341 cases per 100,000 over the past two weeks. Multiple counties in the the region have a rate over 200, the current state average, which is up from a rate of 135 in March. Please continue to follow the guidelines and get your vaccine.
Finally, I wish to say Ramadan Mubarak to all those observing Ramadan in Toledo and across the country. From all of us at the city of Toledo, we wish you a holy month filled with joy, prayer, and reflection.

A walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinic continues 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., tomorrow, April 17 at the Lucas County Rec Center, 2901 Key St., Maumee, Ohio.

Body-Worn Camera Distribution Complete
A crucial goal has been accomplished now that 100 percent of uniformed Toledo police officers who interact with residents have been equipped with body-worn cameras.

The process of equipping TPD with body-worn cameras began in 2017 but after technological compatibility issues, all the units had to be returned in 2018. After purchasing a new set of body-worn cameras in 2018, the first group of cameras went to Field Operations Patrol Officers because they interact with residents the most.

“Body-worn cameras footage has proven to be beneficial to both residents and police departments across the country; the cameras improve public confidence in officers and increase transparency," Police Chief George Kral said. "This has been a long-term goal of mine and I am proud to say today, every uniformed TPD officer that interacts with residents has a body-worn camera."

Toledo was awarded a Section 319 grant by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to restore 24 acres of wetland habitat and 1,950 linear feet of stream along Mud Creek, and treat 36 acres of invasive plant species at Detwiler Marsh.

Detwiler Marsh is a diked wetland located east of the Detwiler Park ball fields and south of Detwiler Park Golf Course. The restoration project will remove invasive plant species and restore Detwiler Marsh by increasing habitat heterogeneity/ variety.

Native plants will be installed throughout the project site, including 16 acres of plantings along the stream to increase diversity and habitat quality. The project will reduce sediment and nutrient loads to Lake Erie.

Toledo in The News
Congressman Marcy Kaptur hopes a federal housing infrastructure pilot program that will benefit dozens of homes across Toledo will serve to convince government agencies to further collaborate and expand the concept nationwide. In front of a home on Hamilton Street in the Junction neighborhood on Wednesday, the Toledo Democrat joined local leaders to announce the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development — through a joint initiative with the Department of Energy — has awarded the city of Toledo and NeighborWorks Toledo $1 million to use toward residential health and safety renovations in at least 40 homes.

The Solheim Cup is less than 6 months away and the city is getting ready. One of the biggest events in golf is coming to Toledo and bringing star-studded concerts and thousands of people with it. Preparations for the 17th Solheim Cup are underway in downtown Toledo. City Council’s Regional Growth, Development, and Small Business Enterprise Committee had a meeting Thursday afternoon to discuss all the details.

A new report by AdvisorSmith ranks several cities as perfect places to retire. Toledo is close to the top of the list.
