In other data news, on April 4th, BiometricUpdate.com published an article entitled Millions face new hurdles under US Social Security ID verification overhaul. In this story, Anthony Kimery describes the Social Security Administration’s new ID verification rules—eliminating phone access for retirees and survivors—with the objective of combatting fraud but the risk of cutting off vulnerable Americans from essential benefits. Amid backlash, SSA scaled back the policy and is exploring alternatives, though questions remain about accessibility and tech readiness.

  • Remote identity proofing has long been a sticking point for federal agencies. The General Services Administration, which oversees Login.gov, came under fire last year for misleading agency clients about whether its platform meets NIST’s identity assurance level 2 (IAL2) standard. Similarly, the IRS faced a significant backlash in 2022 for requiring taxpayers to use facial recognition technology provided by the private vendor ID.me. SSA appears determined to avoid similar controversies, though it is not immune from them.”

NASA finds generative AI can't be trusted

As the reliability of generative AI data remains doubtful, IT leaders need to seriously consider their risk tolerance. Most corporate boards certainly won’t.

Attacking DoD’s Data Problem

As the Deputy and then Acting Under Secretary of Defense Comptroller when DOD underwent its first audit, it was my job to attack the department’s data problem. A look back at the origins of how we did this, by creating the Defense Department Advancing Analytics (Advana) capability, is useful in understanding its future.

CPSC Should Leverage AI to Modernize Product Safety

To maximize AI’s impact, CPSC should focus on three areas: Enhancing current monitoring, enabling real-time detection, and future-proofing enforcement against evolving tactics. This requires technologies ranging from established tools like reverse image search to sophisticated generative AI models that autonomously detect anomalies across vast datasets.

The IC’s New OSINT Strategy Gets the Basics Right

The intelligence community (IC) published its first-ever open-source intelligence (OSINT) strategy in March. It is a big-picture, priority setting document—an essential, basic step to re-launch OSINT as a serious intelligence discipline. The unclassified version may be thin on details, but it provides insight into the fundamental challenges the IC is facing trying to integrate OSINT into its current practices.

Google Is Helping the Trump Administration Deploy AI Along Border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is planning to modernize older video surveillance towers in Arizona that provide the agency an unblinking view of the border. A key part of the effort is adding machine-learning capabilities to CBP cameras, allowing the agency to automatically detect humans and vehicles as they approach the border without continuous monitoring by humans.

President Trump’s War on ‘Information Silos’ Is Bad News for Your Personal Data

When it comes to sensitive personal data, especially data that’s held by the government, silos serve a purpose. One obvious reason: privacy. Certain kinds of information, like medical files and tax returns, are justifiably regarded as sacrosanct—too private to merge with other records. The law provides special protections that limit who can access that information. But this order could force agencies to hand it over to any federal official the president chooses.

The Risk and Opportunity of Open-Source Intelligence

Open-source software development, as regularly used and developed by industry, could be an answer to the data ingestion problem, Critchlow said. “I believe that the defense and intelligence community is not doing enough there,” he stated.

AI startup wants to give troops the power of career intel professionals

Designed for both career intelligence analysts and laypersons, the system allows users to ask a general question or do a deep dive on a topic by correlating data streams from public and private data. For example, a user could ask about ships in a certain area, and culled mapping data or exquisitely collected information can pinpoint vessels in the queried region. An analyst can then zoom in to get more info.

Beyond Entity Resolution: Strengthening Federal Financial Investigations with Actionable Intelligence

As federal agencies grapple with the challenges of entity resolution (ER) in financial oversight, the next logical step is to ensure that the resolved data translates into actionable intelligence. While ER is critical for linking and deduplicating, agencies can leverage that information to drive timely and informed decision-making in their investigative, compliance, and enforcement missions.

Socure makes the case for advanced biometric digital identity verification

The best way for DOGE to promote secure identity verification, however, might be to cease its activities altogether. The unit has raised ample concerns among civil rights groups, who worry its campaign to collect the sensitive and private personal information of millions of Americans could lead to a privacy disaster.
