Recap: TCA 78th Annual Christmas Luncheon
On Friday, December 2, 2022, the TCA hosted its annual Christmas luncheon, which was finally back after a two-year halt due to the pandemic, and it did not miss a beat!

The event sold out, and 2400+ construction professionals from different backgrounds were in attendance and enjoyed all the entertainment, festivities, and networking opportunities.

The event's masters of ceremonies comedian Derek Sequin did an exceptional job and tickled everyone's funny bone with 40 minutes of stand-up.

Easily the highlight of the day was the appearance of former Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion, who, at 101 years of age, delivered a powerful and inspiring speech before a thunderous standing ovation.

An event like this could only be fully realized with the contributions of our extraordinary sponsors. Special thanks go out to our presenting sponsor United Rentals, and the other companies that made this event as successful as it was; Home Depot, Geosolv Design/ Build Inc., Multiplex, Uponor, Trisura Guarantee, G&L, Graham Construction, and Pomerleau.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated.

We look forward to celebrating with you all again in 2023!

Special Thank you to our sponsors

TCA 2022 Innovative Product Award Winners Announced at Construct Canada

The Toronto Construction Association (TCA) 2022 Innovative Product Award (IPA) winners were announced at The 2022 Buildings Show on Thursday, December 1, 2022.

The IPA Award (formerly known as TIPTA) was established in 1994 by TCA and is open to any supplier demonstrating the development and/or the use of innovative technologies in their respective industries.

Congratulations to this year's top three winners:

First place winner: PCL Construction’s Job Site Access (JSA)
PCL won the top spot with Job Site Access (JSA), an access-control software platform that supports safe and secure access to project sites.

Every time someone swipes a badge or passes through a facial-recognition access point, a time-stamped record is created that measures each person’s attendance and time on site. Available via laptop or mobile device, JSA can generate automated attendance reports and eliminate the need for manual sign-in sheets and related paperwork. It also allows for a quick scan-check to verify a worker’s training credentials.

By digitizing all the information about who is on a job site at every hour of the day, Job Site Access can help lower the risk to the general public from wandering onto the site. It can prevent theft and other disruptions by ensuring that only authorized personnel can enter. It is also invaluable in emergency situations, since it allows users to quickly account for the whereabouts of everyone in the area.

Second Place Winner: Corfix

Corfix is a tech company based in Kanata, Ontario, and built on one innovative product: a desktop and mobile application designed to streamline job site management in construction. It is tailored to help small- and medium-sized companies join the digital revolution, freeing them from the labour of maintaining weighty binders full of SDS manuals, company policies, blueprints, and other stacks of paperwork. Instead, all the company's data can be collected, stored, and shared on a user-friendly platform that can be made available to anyone, anywhere.

Third Place Winner: Bidmii International Inc.

Is there anyone who doesn't have a story about a home reno gone wrong, whether it's a homeowner billed for unexpected fees or a contractor hit with endless unplanned-for add-ons? Bidmii aims to change all that.

Bidmii is an online marketplace that connects homeowners and contractors to complete renovation and repair projects. Good home contractors are hard to find (especially in the GTA), and one in every 20 residential renovation projects in Canada ends with a lost deposit. Meanwhile, it takes an average of two months for contractors to collect payments owed for invoiced work. Bidmii not only helps homeowners and contractors find each other, it actually holds project funds in trust, protecting both sides from bad actors.

Thank you to everyone who participated and submitted applications for the 2022 Innovative Product Award!

Six-year Silverthorn storm trunk sewer build at halfway point

A severe storm which hit Toronto almost 20 years ago causing major property damage is the driver of a massive infrastructure project.

Designed by CH2M Hill Canada Ltd (now Jacobs), the $400-million Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer project is an undertaking which took years of planning and design, required shipping a tunnel boring machine from France, and is only about the half-way point of approximately six years of construction.

Its purpose is to protect more than 4,600 homes and businesses in a 140-hectare section of the Fairbank Silverthorn community of northwest Toronto from basement flooding. When the project is completed in 2026, the amount of storm water flowing into Black Creek on the western edge of the community will be cut by approximately 40,000 cubic metres.

The most high-profile—although invisible to the general public—component will be the construction of an approximately three-kilometre-long, 4.5-meter-diameter trunk sewer by EBC Bessac Joint Venture using an Earth Pressure Balancing TBM.

Construction of the trunk sewer, at depths ranging from between 15 to 40 meters below the ground, is scheduled to start next March and take until the end of 2024 to complete. Excavating between seven to 10 metres day in an east-to-west direction, the TBM will operate on a 24/7 schedule to prevent idling in the soft ground in the area. As well, 20 tunneling and micro tunneling shafts will be constructed by Ward & Burke Microtunnelling Limited of Mississauga Ontario (TCA member).

Preliminary work began in 2020/2021 with the installation of 65 inlet control devices—with a total of 330 planned—to restrict storm water from entering combined sewers, reducing combined sewer overflow and the risk of basement flooding. Early next year excavation of the retrieval shaft, at a fenced off compound in a parking lot near a local school, will commence.

The project is part of the city’s Basement Flooding Protection Program which the city approved 2021 and covers 67 basement flooding study areas. By the end of this year approximately will have been spent on the construction of recommended solutions for various areas. This one is funded, in part, by a $73.2 million federal government through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.

Owner: City of Toronto
Consultant: CH2M Hill Canada Ltd (now Jacobs)
Estimated value: $400 million
