STEWARDSHIP AT ST. LAURENCE

Why I Choose to Be at Member of St. Laurence

In response to a decision to become more involved in my community in 2013, I landed at St. Laurence. It had just had a face-lift and the sanctuary was full of light, beautiful and inviting. The people were warm and welcoming. The word "intentional" on the bulletin stood out for me. The clergy talked about "spiritual practices" and living out a new "vision" for the church. I thought that these people must be serious about their faith and it might be a place where I could find nourishment for my own faltering faith.

I loved the music...so much good singing, led by a choir who sang with purpose and commitment. I loved the homilies delivered by the Reverend Anna and Reverend Don who preached about a God of love for all and expanded on the new vision for the church. I enrolled in a course called "Living the Questions" where I learned to be more inclusive in my theology and to have a deeper understanding of God's Presence in my life.

I became involved in Sunday School and in how to interpret to children, Jesus's message to love God, to love your neighbour and to forgive. That was a challenging and humbling experience. I spent time on Parish Council and time as a Warden where I learned the ways of Anglicanism and enjoyed the company of other parishioners. Social justice became important as we joined a new organization, Calgary Alliance for the Common Good. Meeting with others in Thursday morning prayer times has been meaningful as has joining with others to support our friend, Laura in her ministry of sending medical supplies to Ukraine. Good singing at St. Laurence continues, led by Donna and now Marian. As a senior, I have found that singing in the choir is enjoyable and good for the body and the soul.

I am grateful for St. Laurence and for all the people I have met there since 2013. I have grown as a child of God and I continue to be nourished in my faith, thanks to Reverend Jane, the clergy and every single person who participates in the life of the community.

What is getting in the way

of connecting with yourself,

others and the Divine?

On the potter's wheel, nothing lasting can be created until the clay is centered.

Our lives work the same way.

Working with clay by hand, we'll explore ways to center our lives.

Maybe you and your partner keep circling the same argument. Maybe you're snapping at your kids more than you'd like. Maybe stillness and prayer feel farther away than they used to. There's a reason this happens, and it can change.

Join Nancy Shadlock of Centered Mental Fitness and Pam Ehlert (SoulStream Partner) in partnership with The Wisdom Centre for a day of hands in clay, soulful conversation and simple neuroscience-based practices that bring your wisest self back online.

You'll leave with:

• Clarity on the inner Saboteur that most often pulls you away from the people you love

• Several 10-second tools you can use the moment it shows up

• New friends who also want to live from their wisest place

• A clay piece to carry the learnings from day home with you

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Referendum 2026 Results:

On October 19th, just over 2,000,000 Albertans voted in this important referendum. The Question 10 votes were approximately 75% in favour of the Stay in Canada option.

On Questions 1-9, the Yes and No vote counts were often close.  For the final status on these questions, check this website: results.elections.ab.ca/8400

Many thanks to all of you who did the work of this campaign. You informed your families, your neighbours, and your friends of the importance of voting in this referendum and then encouraged them to get out to vote. It was indeed a community effort, resulting in a high turnout to secure Alberta’s place as a province in Canada.

"For many people around the world, the comic sensibility and the world of faith sit beside each other uncomfortably if at all -- the ultimate case of reverent awe versus irreverent play. But what if humour is not only fundamental to the life of faith, but arguably impossible without one? Two-time Juno-nominated stand-up comedian, cartoon voice actor, radio broadcaster, humourist, and practicing Anglican Charlie Demers will speak on two of his very favourite subjects.”

Fire Exit Theatre

November 6th at 7:30PM at the Heather Edwards Theatre (inside Contemporary Calgary) 701 11St. SW
