Growth in Knowing:

Deepening Our Understanding And Connection

Preparing for Seasons of Reforming, Remembering, and Renewing

Dear Church,

What is your favorite color? When you open your closet, what color do you see most often? What colors fill your home, workspace, artwork, or favorite possessions?

Colors do more than decorate our lives. They stir memories, shape moods, and tell stories about who we are and what we value. Sometimes, a single color can transport us back to a meaningful moment or help us see the world in a new way.

As we move through the coming week, I invite you to reflect on three colors that accompany us through this season of the church year: red, orange and black, and white.

Reformation Sunday - October 25 - Red

What comes to mind when you see the color red? In the church, red often reminds us of the Holy Spirit, courage, and the fire of God's transforming presence. It is fitting for Reformation Sunday, a day when we remember that God is always calling the church to renewal, growth, and faithful change.

In Chinese culture, red is the color of joy, blessing, celebration, and life. Traditional weddings are filled with red decorations. During Lunar New Year, red envelopes and red banners symbolize hopes for blessing and abundance in the year ahead.

As you see the color red this week, I wonder:

  • Where is God's Spirit bringing renewal in your life?
  • What old assumptions might God be inviting you to release?
  • What new possibilities might God be placing before you?

Halloween - October 31 - Orange and Black

What comes to mind when you see orange and black? For many, these colors evoke pumpkins, costumes, and neighborhood gatherings. They also remind me of autumn itself. Brilliant leaves turn from green to gold, orange, red, and brown before falling to the ground.

Nature teaches us that letting go is part of life's rhythm. Trees release their leaves, not as a sign of death alone, but as preparation for new growth.

As you notice the colors of autumn, I wonder:

  • What season of transition are you experiencing?
  • What might need to be released?
  • What new life may be quietly emerging?

All Saints Sunday - November 1 - White

What comes to mind when you see the color white? For All Saints Sunday, white reminds us of God's promise, resurrection hope, and the great multitude gathered around God's throne, clothed in white robes as described in Revelation.

A Chinese saying describes a person with a pure heart as being like a clean sheet of white paper, free from hidden agendas and selfish intentions. Whenever I think of white, I think of grace: the opportunity to begin again, to forgive and be forgiven, and to trust that God continues to make all things new.

On All Saints Sunday, we remember those who have gone before us in faith. We give thanks for the ways their lives continue to shape our own. We also remember that we belong to the same body of Christ, joined across generations by God's love.

As you reflect on the color white, I wonder:

  • Whose faith has inspired yours?
  • For whom are you especially grateful this year?
  • How have you experienced God's grace and new beginnings?

During worship on All Saints Sunday, each household will be invited to light a candle during the Prayers of Intercession. This light serves as a sign of Christ's presence among us as we remember the saints who have gone before us, give thanks for loved ones who shaped our lives, and celebrate God's gifts in creation.

Families are also invited to bring a photograph or a meaningful keepsake, no larger than the palm of your hand, to place on the remembrance table as they light their candle. Together, we will remember those who taught us the faith, loved ones who have died, and beloved animal companions who brought comfort, joy, and companionship along life's journey. As we light our candles, we entrust them all to God's love and give thanks for the ways they continue to bless our lives.

As we journey through these days of reforming, remembering, and renewing, may we notice God's presence in unexpected places, even in the colors around us. May the Holy Spirit ignite our hearts with courage, help us embrace life's seasons of change, and fill us with hope as we remember the saints who have gone before us. AMEN.

With gratitude and joy,

Rev. Jade Yi

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend our Annual Congregational Budget Meeting. This gathering is an important part of our life together as a congregation. All affirmed members will receive the recommended budget on Friday, November 6. A brief 30-minute Q&A forum will be held after worship on Sunday, November 8, at approximately 11:00 a.m. to address questions and provide information in preparation for the Congregational Budget Meeting. A Zoom link for the meeting will be emailed to all affirmed members on Saturday, November 14.

ELCA Youth Gathering 2027:

The Journey Begins!

With great joy and excitement, we are beginning our journey to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Minneapolis, June 28 through July 2, 2027! We are thrilled to share that three of our youth will represent our congregation: Mikayla Bowman, Marleen Campbell, and Serena Raaum.

Registration will take place on October 21, 2026, marking the start of what promises to be a meaningful and transformative faith experience. Click here to learn more about the ELCA Youth Gathering.

This adventure belongs to all of us. As a congregation, we have the wonderful opportunity to encourage, pray for, and support our youth as they prepare for this life-changing event. On the last Sunday of this month, October 25, our youth and their families will gather to begin planning fundraising events that will help make this journey possible. We hope you'll join us in celebrating this exciting milestone and supporting their efforts along the way.

If any youth would like to attend the ELCA Youth Gathering, please contact Pastor Jade by email pastor@pointeofgracechurch.org before October 21, 2026, so that registration arrangements can be made. And if your heart is stirred by the opportunity to walk alongside our youth on this journey of faith, we would be delighted to talk with you about serving as the primary adult leader for the trip. Please reach out to Pastor Jade to learn more about this meaningful and rewarding role.

The ELCA Youth Gathering offers young people a unique opportunity to grow in faith, deepen friendships, discover their gifts, callings, and experience the joy of being part of the wider church. Thank you for investing in the faith and future of our youth. Your prayers, encouragement, and generosity will help make this incredible experience a reality.

"Let no one despise your youth but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity." (1 Timothy 4:12)

Parent Resources:

Support, Tools, and Shared Wisdom

Parenting Teens with Love & Logic Class

The 3rd Sunday of each month at 11:00 am

When kids hit their teen years, parenting takes on a whole new dimension. Along with that, kids are frequently dealing with the challenges of social media and other technologies that we didn't have as kids ourselves. Still, we want them ready for their adult lives ahead while empowering them to make positive decisions and learning from their mistakes. We are offering a parenting class and support group to help gain new perspectives and strategies as parents.

We meet the 3rd Sunday of every month at 11am in the Meeting Room. The class is taught by Karl Olson, church member, Love and Logic trainer, educator, and parent. If you have any questions please e-mail Karl at karltolson@gmail.com

While parenting can feel lonely, this is a chance to come together to celebrate and collaborate.

Jesus vs Caesar:

For People Tired of Serving the Wrong God

Sat, Nov 14 from 9am-3pm

Edmonds United methodist Church

Facilitator: Dr. Joerg Rieger

Our second retreat, Jesus v. Caesar: For People Tired of Serving the Wrong God, explores the ways our lives have become intertwined with the empire of Capitalism. We end up serving false gods, of nation, of party, economy, and to the endless exhaustion and demand. This retreat is for anyone tired of quietly serving gods and looking for something practical to do as people of faith. Dr. Rieger introduces us to the practice of solidarity circles, and with neighbors and communities, and where we can build power for resistance in the temptations to follow the Caesars in our day.

“Homelessness: A Renewal of Commitment”

Your feedback is desired!

All ELCA members are invited to share feedback on draft revisions to the social message “Homelessness: A Renewal of Commitment,” first adopted in 1990. At the request of the 2022 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, the ELCA Church Council authorized a reconsideration for possible substantive revision of a section of the social message.

Reconsideration is a formal process of communal discernment about social issues in the church. This reconsideration allows the ELCA to revisit the social message in light of the church’s growing understanding of homelessness, the current lived realities of people who are unhoused or precariously housed, and changes in civil law and the economy that present new challenges to housing in the United States.

Visit ELCA.org/homelessness to read the draft and to submit your feedback via a survey before Nov. 30. Feedback, questions and concerns can also be sent to DraftSocialMessage@ELCA.org.

  • If an email shows no message body, looks blank, an image, or asks you to click a link to “view” the content, do not open it. Blank or empty emails can trigger unsafe downloads or malicious files attempting to take over your device.

Mission to Seafarers

We Collect ditty bag supplies all year. Drop donations in the blue bin out side the church office.

What is a ditty bag? Do you use a small travel bag to hold important essentials when you take a trip? If so, you already use a ditty bag, or something like one! At the Seattle Seafarers Center, we provide about 1,000 ditty bags to merchant seafarers with bags full of all kinds of basic necessities each year.

What goes into a ditty bag?

At a minimum, all bags should include the following:

  • an adult-sized knit hat
  • full size (not travel size) shampoo, body wash, or bar of soap
  • full size toothpaste
  • toothbrush (individually wrapped)
  • deodorant
  • shaving cream
  • 1-2 razors

Some favorite toiletry brands of seafarers are Head & Shoulders, Dove, and Old Spice.

You can optionally include additional items such as:

  • candy or snacks (ex. individually wrapped chocolate, nuts, or trail mix)
  • deck of cards or other small games
  • notepad and pen/pencil
  • hand or body lotion
  • socks or gloves
  • a hand-written card
  • something else special !

We also accept donations of sanitary products to include in ditty bags specifically for women. You can find a list of products here: Items for Female Seafarers.

The Spirit is on the move!

For the last 8 years our monthly publication The Spirit has featured articles from both the bishop AND the synod vice president. With a new vice president at the helm, we are shaking things up! While we will continue to offer a monthly message from the bishop (or the bishop's office) via The Spirit, we have added a NEW publication from the vice president called Lay of the Land in the PNW. In this monthly missive, Synod VP Cindy Shultz will share a story (or two) featuring lay leadership around the synod. Our hope is that congregations will share both of these messages in their newsletters.

Synod Vice President, Cindy Shultz. This month Cindy introduces herself and this new format. Subsequent months she will share stories lifting up the ministry of LAY folk in our synod. (Thus, the title, LAY of the Land in the PNW!)

The "Lost & Found" in the Church Office and clothes hanging in the narthex for over 6 months will be donated.

If you have lost something, remember to contact the church office to see if we have found it.

Grace Notes Deadline

If articles are not received before the deadline, they will be added to the next week's edition.

We acknowledge

that our service is being held on the original and ancestral homelands of the Salish Coastal peoples, and we give thanks for their presence here since time of old. We remember and celebrate the Indigenous peoples and tribal nations who were the first to love, pray, grow, celebrate, cry, drum, and sing upon these lands. We also wish to recognize and honor all our Indigenous siblings who have and continue to call this land their home.

May all of us work towards learning and growing, and sharing in the journey towards truth and healing – especially as we work to fulfill our commitments as stated in "A Declaration of the ELCA to American Indian and Alaska Native People” as well as the 2022 Resolution that was passed by the Northwest Washington Synod Council to renew, restore, continue and grow in relationship with the Indigenous peoples who are our neighbors.
