CTE Newsletter November 2025 | | |
Tansi! Hello!
I am very excited to be joining the Capilano University community for the next year as the interim Director, Teaching and Learning. I have been a scholar of teaching and learning in higher education for more than two decades, and am excited to join the CTE team to help advance the teaching and learning priorities of everyone in the CapU community!
| |
| I come to Capilano University most recently from the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus, where I served as the Associate Provost, Academic Programs, Teaching and Learning. And have also had stops at Dalhousie University, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of Alberta over the past twenty-five years, mostly in leadership roles related to teaching, learning, and student success. Originally from the Edmonton area, I am primarily of Métis (thanks to my Mom) and Swiss ancestry (thanks to my Dad), but I have had strong connections with BC throughout my life (and family connections to CapU as one of my nephews is currently a student here). | |
As you can see through the newsletter, the CTE team continues to offer a variety of exceptional opportunities to connect around teaching and learning over the coming months as we enter the home stretch for the Fall semester, and look forward into the Spring semester.
Everyone in the CTE team wishes Brit Paris the best as she embarks on her parental leave, and we look forward to her return in a year! In the meantime, I look forward to meeting and working with many of you over the next year!
Maarsi,
Brad Wuetherick
Director, Teaching and Learning (interim)

In The Wicked Problem of AI and Assessment, Thomas Corbin and colleagues argue that the challenges GenAI poses to higher education assessment should be understood through the lens of “wicked problems,” as defined by Rittel and Webber.

(Re)Imagining Our Indigenization and Decolonization Page
In early October the CTE’s Indigenization and Decolonization page was updated with invitations to (re)consider, (re)examine, and (re)imagine with Indigenization, decolonization, teaching, and learning. This iteration involves deliberations on what it may mean to Indigenize and decolonize teaching and learning, a curated list of resources, links to the Library’s Research Guides, and an introduction to Chén̓chenstway.

TCQuiz (Teacher Controlled Quiz)
Developed by Tamara Dakic, a CapU faculty member, TCQuiz is now available in eLearn! This Moodle plugin lets instructors control which quiz questions students see and answer in real time. It’s perfect for in-class activities where you want to guide students through questions, view their responses instantly, and provide immediate feedback.
If you’re interested in trying TCQuiz, contact the EdTech team to learn more or get support setting it up.

Reminder: Review Options in eLearn Quiz Settings
To allow your students to view their responses, grades, or feedback and control when (e.g. During, Immediately, Later) students see them, check the boxes (e.g. ‘The attempt’, ‘Marks’, ‘Maximum marks’) in the relevant timeframe row. A close date for quizzes will be required if you want students to review the quiz afterward. Review options can be found under each quiz’s setting.
